Nonprofit Marketing Trends 2013 | Business 2 Community

Digital marketing is becoming an increasingly large portion of nonprofit marketing. With methods extending into every corner of the Internet, including search engines, social media, blogs/forums and paid advertising, it is easier than ever to share your message with the world. Since the main goals of any nonprofit marketing initiative are to increase awareness about the cause and generate fundraising dollars, it is important that the message is conveyed both passionately and succinctly.

However, in order to figure out where to best spend a nonprofit?s limited budget, it is important to keep up on current and emerging trends. According to a study conducted in 2012, the use of digital media for fundraising and advocacy initiatives grew this year by 19.6%. As a result, online donations grew 12.6% from 2011. Likewise, the median donation size is up to $93.67, a 2% increase from 2011. The top three performing verticals in donations were higher education, hospitals and human & social services. The importance of online advocacy has grown in our culture, as it is now easier than ever to share information about those charities for which you are the most passionate. The number of people who have taken at least one online advocacy action grew by 17% in 2011. On average, 12% of each organization?s email lists took online advocacy action. There is also good news specifically for smaller nonprofits: Of those surveyed with fewer than 10,000 emails, online donations increased 26.7% in median revenue.

Given this information, here are some tips to improve your nonprofit marketing channels:

Email marketing: Harnessing the power of your list is going to become increasingly important. Therefore, try to simplify advocacy actions that can be taken from an email send. Examples include linking to your site, offering social share buttons and registration options from an email could make a huge difference in engagement. Also, share the good news. If your nonprofit meets a milestone, send a ?thank you? email to more than just donors. You can also check out this white paper on email marketing for more tips and tools.

Social media: It?s no secret that donors want to see where their money goes. Therefore, transparency is key. Help them visualize the data in concrete terms with an infographic or a similar medium. Your brand has to become a digital storyteller. Update frequently with personal stories of how fundraising dollars impacts the cause. Share information about your volunteers and ways to get involved. Creating compelling content will increase shares and thus, your message.

Paid ads: Increase online donations with paid ads on search engines and social media channels. Whether it?s a click-to-call extension for mobile or promoting a video about a campaign?s success, give potential donors every reason and opportunity to share your cause. If you?re not sure how to get started with SEM, read our blog post about paid search for nonprofits.

Remember: With a limited source of funds, it can often be difficult to decide where to allocate your budget. That?s why it is extremely important to optimize each marketing initiative in which you participate. It is better to have the money to do one thing well (testing, measuring, optimizing) than to be spread thin. Therefore, choose your channels wisely and be sure your target audience is there.

Gift Guide 2012: For Kids & Pets ? Elements of Style Blog

The universe (and my ovaries) have decided that it?s only to be Andrew and the dogs for me this Christmas.? And so for now my little muchkins Ollie and Bax ARE my kids- so I chose to lump pets and kids together in this guide. Here are some sweet little treats for little ones of both species. :)

1. How friggin? awesome is this wee little faux fur vest? When I have a little one you better believe we will have matching ones. :)

2. Oliver is straight up obsessed with squirrels. And Baxter?s best friend in the whole world is a ratty squirrel toy named Smelly.? So I think they would really rock these sweaters, which gave me such a good laugh ( and $9 of each purchase goes to a charity of your choice!)

3.? This mobile is the most stylish, amazing thing ever! I could design a whole nursery around this beauty. A great gift for someone whose expecting and is into design!

4. Don?t have space for a ping pong table? This little set will thrill the kids once you clear off the dining room table or coffee table (and the ball is so light your vases won?t get smashed)

5. I love this rustic rope leash (NEED two for the boys!)

6. Pinhole Press has these fantastic flash cards you can make from your own photos (and a memory game too!) I love that you can teach kids from imagery they recognize from their own life.

7. Adorable books for little ladies- the Henley one?s cover reminds me of ?I Married Adventure?, no?? And it?s never too soon to learn about Audrey.

8. Every little girl likes glitter shoes, I?m certain! (I?m, of course, partial to the leopard booties).

9. This striped sweater would look SO handsome on a little fella!!!

10. This fuzzy sheep rocker is both fun and so stylish in a nursery.? Really love it.

11. Pretty sure boys and girls alike would like to play around with this silly glasses set.

12. No more ugly pet beds- these look like stylish sheepskin rugs (which my dogs won?t get off!) They?ll blend right in with any modern decor.

French court clears Continental of Concorde crash

13 hrs.

VERSAILLES, France -- A French appeals court on Thursday absolved Continental Airlines of blame for a 2000 Concorde crash that killed 113 people and cleared a mechanic at the U.S. airline of the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

The verdict comes over a decade after the accident helped to spell the end of the supersonic airliner. A previous court ruled that a small metal strip that fell onto the runway from a Continental aircraft just before the Concorde took off from Paris, caused the crash.

Continental was originally fined 200,000 euros and ordered to pay the Concorde's operator, Air France, a million euros in damages. Continental appealed the verdict which it described as unfair and absurd.

Welder John Taylor was cleared of a 15-month suspended prison sentence for having gone against industry norms and used titanium to forge the piece that dropped off the plane.

Continental, now part of United Continental Holdings , had been ordered under the original ruling to pay 70 percent of any damages payable to families of victims. Airbus parent EADS would have to pay the other 30 percent.

The crash sped up the demise of the droop-nosed Concorde - the fastest commercial airliner in history and a symbol of Franco-British co-operation - as safety concerns coupled with an economic downturn after 9/11 drove away its wealthy customers.

The Air France Concorde, carrying mostly German tourists bound for a Caribbean cruise, was taking off from Paris on July 25, 2000 when an engine caught fire. Trailing a plume of flames, it crashed into a hotel near Charles de Gaulle airport. All 109 passengers and four people on the ground died.

After modifications, the plane returned to service but its operators, Air France and British Airways, retired it in 2003, citing high operating costs and a drop in demand.?

Daily joke: Low self-esteem | Baltic News Network - News from ...

A guy had been feeling down for so long that he finally decided to seek the aid of a psychiatrist.

He went there, lay on the couch, spilled his guts then waited for the profound wisdom of the psychiatrist to make him feel better.

The psychiatrist asked him a few questions, took some notes then sat thinking in silence for a few minutes with a puzzled look on his face.

Suddenly, he looked up with an expression of delight and said, ?Um, I think your problem is low self-esteem. It is very common among losers.?

3 BP employees arraigned on Gulf oil spill charges

NEW ORLEANS ? Two BP rig supervisors and a former BP executive pleaded not guilty Wednesday to criminal charges stemming from the deadly Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and the company?s response to the massive 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP well site leaders Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine, along with former BP vice-president of exploration for the Gulf David Rainey, remained free on bond following their arraignments in federal court.

Kaluza and Vidrine are charged with manslaughter in the deaths of 11 rig workers. They are accused of disregarding abnormally high pressure readings that should have been glaring indications of trouble just before the blowout of BP?s Macondo well.

Rainey was charged separately with concealing information from Congress about the amount of oil that was leaking from the well. Millions of gallons of crude oil spewed from BP?s well for months.

Kaluza professed his innocence on his way into court, making his first public comments since the April 2010 explosion that killed his co-workers.

?I think about the tragedy of the Deepwater Horizon every day,? Kaluza told reporters. ?But I did not cause this tragedy. I am innocent and I put my trust, reputation and future in the hands of the judge and the jury.?

Kaluza and Vidrine?s lawyers both accused the Justice Department of using their clients as scapegoats. They noted that other government investigations have spread out the blame for the disaster and concluded it was the product of a complex series of mistakes, made both onshore and on the rig.

?Bob and Don did their jobs,? said Shaun Clarke, one of Kaluza?s attorneys. ?They did them correctly and they did them in accordance with their training.?

Robert Habans, one of Vidrine?s lawyers, said his client diligently followed instructions he received from engineers and others onshore.

?He?s not the architect or the engineer. He didn?t design the well, and he didn?t make the critical decisions in this case,? Habans said.

The case against Kaluza and Vidrine centres on their roles in supervising ?negative testing,? which is designed to assess whether a cement barrier is effectively preventing oil or gas from flowing up the well. The indictment says they had ?multiple indications? from the negative testing that the well wasn?t secure. Yet they allegedly failed to alert onshore engineers about the problems during the testing, accepted a ?nonsensical explanation? for abnormal pressure readings and eventually decided to stop investigating.

Habans, however, said court records related to civil litigation over the spill indicate Vidrine did discuss the test results with an onshore engineer less than an hour before the blast. A Justice Department attorney questioned a BP expert about the phone conversation between Vidrine and the engineer, Mark Hafle.

?It?s almost inconceivable to me that the government in the indictment makes a contrary allegation,? Habans said.

But the indictment appears to fault Kaluza and Vidrine for failing to phone engineers on shore earlier that day while the tests were being performed.

Lawyers for Rainey declined to comment. A Justice Department spokeswoman also declined to comment.

A trial for Kaluza and Vidrine is scheduled to start on Feb. 4, while Rainey has a Jan. 28 trial date. Both dates could be postponed given the complexity of the cases.

BP announced earlier this month that it will plead guilty to manslaughter, obstruction of Congress and other charges and pay a record $4.5 billion in penalties to resolve a Justice Department probe of the disaster.

Attorneys for BP and the Justice Department are scheduled to meet Dec. 11 with a federal judge to discuss a date for the company to plead guilty.

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig, owned by Transocean Ltd. but operated on behalf of BP, was drilling in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast on April 20, 2010, when it was rocked by an explosion. The bodies of 11 workers were never recovered.

HyTAQ hybrid quadrotor robot travels by air and land, leaves us no place to hide video

Few robots can travel gracefully through more than one medium; more often than not, they're either strictly airborne or tied to the ground. The Illinois Institute of Technology's HyTAQ quadrotor doesn't abide by these arbitrary limits. The hybrid machine, designed by Arash Kalantari and Matthew Spenko, uses the same actuators to drive both its flight as well as a surrounding cage for rolling along on the ground, quickly switching between the two methods. It's clearly adaptable, but using the one system also provides large power advantages over a traditional quadrotor, Spenko tells us. While HyTAQ's battery lasts only for 5 minutes and 1,969 feet of pure flight, that jumps to 27 minutes and 7,874 feet when the robot can use a smooth floor instead -- and of course, it can hop over ground obstacles altogether instead of making a detour. The range of the robot and its pilot are the main limiting factors, but the patent process is already underway with hopes of winning commercial deals. We're both excited and worried as a result; as wonderfully flexible as HyTAQ is, widescale adoption could lead to especially relentless robots during the inevitable takeover.

Businessman Plans For Mars Colony, Perhaps Jumps the Gun ...

Tuesday, November 27, 2012, by Amy Schellenbaum

marselonmusk.jpgIllustration via Gizmodo

Elon Musk, the entrepreneur who co-founded Tesla Motors and Paypal, has been doing some serious planning for his next big venture: his future dominion on Mars. That's right, Musk has called Newt Gingrich's moon colony and raised the politician, oh, 35 million miles. He's not the first entrepreneur to dream up a brand new plot of land to mold as his very own?remember the "breastauranteur" who bought a whole town and renamed it Bikinis??but this Musk fellow, he dreams big: his Mars colony, a city inside a giant pressurized bubble, will house around 80,000 people, perhaps making it No. 1 on the list of most outrageous plans for cities of the future. The territory's first 10 colonizers would need thousands of pounds of construction materials and machinery, which seems to be a wee bit of an undertaking, considering it took eight years and $2.5 billion for NASA to land Curiosity Rover. The whole plan is estimated to cost around $36B, which, as Gizmodo points out, "actually sounds like a bargain, considering there is currently no way to support life on Mars." Is the guy crazy? Well, yes and no. Sure, his plans are largely impossible to obtain in his lifetime, but, come on, he's a wildly wealth entrepreneur, if you can't dream big after you've made your billions, then what's the point?

Fantastic On-Hand Resource: The Homeschooling Book of Lists

I rarely find home education materials in big-box bookstores, so you can imagine my surprise when this book jumped off the shelf and into my hands. Michael and Mary Leppert?s comprehensive The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a resource I consult quite regularly. And here?s why: it?s jam packed with information.

More than just another guide to homeschooling, The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a compendium of homeschooling resources, publishers, suppliers, publications, websites, and other references. It?s divided into five major sections:

  • Things to Consider Before Homeschooling
  • Homeschooling Models and Methods
  • Subjects and Lesson Plans
  • Homeschooling Resources
  • Getting Your Homeschooled Student into College

Each section then branches out into a wide variety of topics to explore and consider. For example, Part 4, Homeschooling Resources, comprises 20 different lists, such as:

  • Various religious resource lists
  • Ethnic resources
  • Boxed curricula
  • Homeschooling with nonelectric games
  • Special needs resources
  • Tutors and tutoring
  • Testing and test prep
  • Charter schools and independent study programs

Of course, any print materials that list website URLs run the risk that those addresses won?t always be valid. The same holds true for this manual. However, a simple Google search enabled me to find whatever I needed, so this really isn?t an issue.

I?m always on the lookout for new and different resources to enrich my children?s education, but I don?t have a lot of time to devote to this particular activity. The Homeschooling Book of Lists?makes it easy for me. In fact, ?my own copy of this handy reference tool for busy homeschooling families boasts highlighted and dog-eared pages ? and for good reason!

UN says thawing permafrost to boost global warming

Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) speaks at the opening session of the United Nations Climate Change conference in Doha, Qatar, Monday, Nov. 26, 2012. U.N. talks on a new climate pact resumed Monday in oil and gas-rich Qatar, where negotiators from nearly 200 countries will discuss fighting global warming and helping poor nations adapt to it. The two-decade-old talks have not fulfilled their main purpose: reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists say are warming the planet. (AP Photo/Osama Faisal)

(AP) ? Thawing permafrost covering almost a quarter of the northern hemisphere could "significantly amplify global warming" at a time when the world is already struggling to reign in rising greenhouse gases, a U.N. report said on Tuesday.

The warning comes as United Nations climate negotiations enter a second day, with the focus on the Kyoto Protocol ? a legally-binding emissions cap that expires this year and remains the most significant international achievement in the fight against global warming. Countries are hoping to negotiate an extension to the pact that runs until at least 2020.

The U.N. said the potential hazards of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost has until now not been factored into climate models. It is calling for a special U.N. climate panel to assess the warming and for the creation of "national monitoring networks and adaptation plans" to help better understand the threat.

In the past, land with permafrost experienced thawing on the surface during summertime, but now scientists are witnessing thaws that reach up to 10 feet deep due to warmer temperatures. The softened earth releases gases from decaying plants that have been stuck below frozen ground for millennia.

"Permafrost is one of the keys to the planet's future because it contains large stores of frozen organic matter that, if thawed and released into the atmosphere, would amplify current global warming and propel us to a warmer world," said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner in a statement.

At the climate talks in Doha, Qatar, negotiations over Kyoto started on Tuesday. Many rich countries such as Japan, Russia and Canada have refused to endorse the extension, and talks are expected to be heated. The United States was the lone industrialized country not to join the original pact because it did not include other big greenhouse gas emitters like China.

In its current form, a pact that once incorporated all industrialized countries except the United States would now only include the European Union, Australia and several smaller countries which together account for less than 15 percent of global emissions.

"We want to send a very clear message. We will not accept a second commitment period that is not worth the paper that it's written on," Asad Rehman of the Climate Justice Now! network told delegates. "We will not collude in a lie if that locks us into eight years of inaction and that condemns people and planet to a climate catastrophe."

The Japanese delegation defended its decision not to sign onto a Kyoto extension, insisting it would be better to focus on coming to an agreement by 2015 that would require all countries to do their part to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F), compared to preindustrial times.

"As we have been explaining, only developed countries are legally bound by the Kyoto Protocol and their emissions are only 26 percent," said Masahiko Horie, speaking for the Japanese delegation.

"If we continue the same, only one quarter of the world is legally bound and three quarters of countries are not bound at all," he said. "Japan will not be participating in a second commitment period because, what is important, is for the world is to formulate a new framework which is fair and effective and which all parties will join."

The position of Japan and other developed countries has the potential to reignite the battles between rich and poor nations that have doomed past efforts to reach a deal. So far that hasn't happened, but countries like Brazil are warning that it will be difficult for poor nations to do their part if they continue watching industrialized nations shy away from legally-binding pacts like Kyoto.

"This is a very serious thing," said Andre Correa do Lago, who heads the Brazil delegation and is the director general for Environment and Special Affairs in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

"If rich countries which have the financial means, have technology, have a stable population, already have a large middle class, if these countries think they cannot reduce and work to fight climate change, how can they ever think that developing countries can do it," do Lago said. "That is why the Kyoto Protocol has to be kept alive. It's the bar. If we take it out, we have what people call the Wild West. Everybody will do what they want to do. With everyone doing what they want to do, you are not going get the reductions necessary.

Higher education: Humboldt State University launches marijuana institute

Humboldt County, California, ?the heartland of high-grade marijuana farming? in the Golden State according to The New Yorker, now boasts the first and ? for now ? only academic institute dedicated solely to cannabis.

The Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research on the campus of Humboldt State University sponsors scholarly lectures and will be a hub for research among 11 faculty members from a wide range of fields including economics, geography, politics and psychology, The Associated Press reports.

One of the professors is analyzing the politics of pot legalization, reports the Times-Standard of Eureka, CA. Another professor is researching the effects of marijuana cultivation on the environment. Politics professor Jason Plume will present a lecture this week on the marijuana reform movement ? one of seven lectures the institute is scheduled to host this year.

Humboldt State University in Arcata, about 280 miles north of San Francisco, is the northernmost campus of the California State University system.

?If anyone is going to have a marijuana institute, it really should be Humboldt State,? economist Erick Eschker, the institute?s co-chair, told the Times-Standard. ?It has the potential to be a world-class institute, and we?re just getting going.?

Eschker is currently collecting local marijuana production data and investigating its connection to employment in the county.

While various other American universities have institutes that bring together multiple disciplines to focus on illicit drugs, the one at Humboldt State appears to be the only one devoted exclusively to marijuana.

The notion for the institute first took root among Humboldt State faculty in 2010, reports the AP. At the time, California was in the midst of an intense political battle over Proposition 19, which, had it passed, would have made marijuana essentially the equivalent of alcohol under state law.

?With these public discussions, there were a lot more questions than there were answers,? said sociology professor Josh Meisel, the other co-chair of the institute, the Times-Standard says.

Meisel and other faculty members who are now part of the institute wanted to apply academic rigor to the economic, political and health-related issues raised by marijuana usage.

Now that voters in Colorado and Washington have passed ballot measures legalizing marijuana at the state level, the institute is more vital than ever.

?Our goal is to try and aid some more informed policy-level decisions,? Meisel said, according to the Times-Standard.

Difference between Cloud Based Phone System and Business ...

Business telephone system

Business telephone system generally has multiple extensions to facilitate all key employees of an organization to intercommunicate amongst themselves and make outbound calls to suppliers, field personnel, customers and other stakeholders. The simple fact is a business telephone system is indispensible for any enterprise regardless of its size and scale of operations.

Present day business phone systems have several standard as well as advanced optional features such as Auto Attendant, Speed Dialing, Conferencing, Call Forwarding, Find-me-follow-me, Do not Disturb, Call Transfer, Toll-Free Numbers, Caller ID Blocking, Multi-Ring facility, Distinctive Ringing, Enhanced Voicemail, Area Code Selection, Anonymous Call Block etc.

A business phone system can range from a key pad system meant for small businesses to an intermediate hybrid system to a PBX (private branch exchange) for large corporations.

Business telephone systems can function using the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and/or over the Internet (called Internet telephony or VoIP). Business phone systems can also be availed as a hosted PBX system - where the entire hardware will be located at the service provider's place. The major advantage of a Hosted PBX is the user need not invest in the equipment nor bother about managing and maintaining the system.

Perhaps you can also consider adding unified messaging and online fax facility. The onus is on you to select the right business phone system that will help your employees to make become more efficient and improve their productivity.

Cloud Based Phone System

Cloud based phone system is the latest innovation and it simply means phone service that is delivered through the internet.

In today's highly competitive scenario, business enterprises to stay and thrive should completely focus on business developmental activities and not waste time in less productive work like managing and maintaining the communication system.

Cloud PBX recognizes this fact as it is Internet-based voice and data communications and all telecommunications applications, switching and storage are hosted by a third-party service provider at his premises. Cloud PBX has all the features of a traditional telephone system and a lot more. One more valid reason why companies may opt for a Cloud based phone system will be the cost factor.

The Cloud based phone system has the potential to deliver calls over the internet, route incoming calls to the right extension within a company, and provide all standard as well as advanced telephone features including voicemail and call recording.

A major benefit of Cloud-PBX is scalability. You can initially buy the basic system and add extensions and optional advanced features as your business grows. As Cloud PBX uses the internet, you can have a telephone connected to the Cloud PBX sans geographic boundaries. A Cloud PBX phone system also allows users to get connected to VoIP handsets.

The concept of Cloud PBX has truly caught on amongst the business community and there is a sourt in the number of Cloud PBX service providers.

The concept of Cloud PBX has truly caught on amongst the business community and there is a spurt in the number of Cloud PBX service providers. In view of this, you can expect competitive pricing and efficient 24X7 service.

Solid Internet Marketing Techniques For The Beginner ? DataGlove ...

Working to build a site to market your products, can be overwhelming. Trying to determine what will attract customers to your site can be a challenging task. Some tips and ideas are listed below that will help you with this task.

For your online business try the ?bill me later? option. Many customers like to pay right away. But there?s other?s who want to pay over a period of time. See if this option works for generating more sales and traffic to your website. You can do a trial period to determine if this works for you.

Making people aware of both the advantages and disadvantaged of your advertised product can make your audience trust your claims more. While you shouldn?t make the negatives of your product sound too bad, putting them in with the positives (which should be exaggerated somewhat) is a great way to earn your audience?s trust.

When you send a purchase to a customer by mail, consider including a sample in the box of a new product. For example, if you just got in some new long-lasting batteries you could include a pair in the box to run the electronics the person has bought. It?s a great way for them to test it out.

Use local business directories. Many online business directories will provide free listings. Get your business listed on as many as possible to attract more visitors to your site. Search for the directories that offer free listings, since there is no need to pay for something that you can get for free.

If you intend to spend money on your internet marketing efforts, go after traffic using the appropriate strategies. Pay-per-click (PPC) search engines will turn your money into favorable search rankings. Affiliate marketing programs will pay off other websites for driving traffic to yours. Once you decide to spend money for traffic, make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

Build other websites that revolve around your primary product or subject. Do not create websites that are junk. Take your time and include relevant information. This will keep people at your website longer, and you will be able to trust the links to your website, which is where you will bring in customers and make money.

Make a website for your business. This should be one of the first steps to market your business using the Internet. By setting up a website that is online you can expand your business because you will be able to reach more customers. This also makes it easier for existing customers to find you.

If your business is linked to affiliate businesses, consider brainstorming with other business owners. Combining thoughts and products, will help build exposure for both businesses and boost customer loyalty to both. If the business you choose to work with is competition, choose a neutral product that will not give them an edge.

Use color on your web page. A plain white web page is unlikely to do as much business as one that has an eye-catching color. Experiment a little to see what works best for you and the type of business that you are running. You can also change the style and size of the wording on your page, which will help to draw customers in.

After you get past all the scams out there and realize that internet marketing follows a logical path and not a miraculous one, you can begin to build a solid business. Follow this advice and you will start to turn your ideas into money. Eventually, you might just hit that six-figure mark.

This Trevo Review explains why this is a great internet business that allows you to work from home.

Business Security Tips for the Holidays - Business Review USA

In the run up to Christmas, businesses need to ensure that they have checked their list twice when it comes to IT security. Not only do employees browse for Christmas gifts online during their lunch breaks, but an increasing number of people work remotely over the festive period. Employees can unknowingly put their business at risk from the inside by inadvertently opening the door to a virus or spyware, which can have devastating consequences to a business and its customers.

1. ? ?Shop around

Whatever the size of your business; you don?t have to plunder the Christmas party fund to afford proper protection during the festive season. Smaller businesses can be an easy target because they are less likely to invest in the most expensive corporate solutions. However, there are plenty of cost effective options to be had for the savvy shopper. Look for reputable antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-spam packages that will block hackers when installed across all corporate devices. Of course, the best and most cost effective option is to have security built into your network if you want to stop cyber-attacks at the source.

?

?

2. ? ?Consider the cloud

Father Christmas isn?t the only one who can travel around the world at the speed of light. The cloud has made storing data and accessing Apps from anywhere much easier. Partnering with a cloud provider whose service is optimised for high security standards can strengthen the safety net around your data. However, make sure you take control of your data in the cloud by choosing a trusted provider who is open with you about where your data is held and how this may change. Ensure that you can decide where your data is stored and how it is moved, and choose a provider who will offer you a robust SLA and has a proven track record.

?

?

3. ? ?Education is the perfect gift

Enforce a thorough internet security policy for employees that covers threat management across PC, mobile and social media activity. It is imperative that employees understand the risk that cybercrime poses and the costly consequences of a breach during the Christmas period, in order to motivate adherence to the guidelines you provide.?

?

?

4. ? ?Take responsibility

It may sound simple, but ensure that someone within your organisation is taking responsibility for monitoring the current security threats. Patching software and making staff aware of the latest scams will ensure that full protection is maintained and no chinks in your security armour go unnoticed.

?

5. ? ?Stay one step ahead of BYOD

Whilst, of course, it is essential to implement adequate protection at the business edge, it is equally important to ensure that employees aren?t unwittingly putting the business at risk. Research earlier this year revealed that nearly one in two small businesses have experienced a security breach caused by staff. With the growing popularity of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), employees intending to take new gadgets from their Christmas stockings into the corporate environment need guidance on how to do this without compromising business security. ? ? ?

?

6. ? ?Protection for remote workers?

The same security rules apply for all employees, whatever their working environment this Christmas. Make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect staff that are accessing the corporate network and applications outside the office. Working smarter and more securely on the move requires the likes of endpoint protection, along with a closely maintained corporate data usage policy.?

112 killed in fire at Bangladesh garment factory

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out at the seven-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions late Saturday. By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press.

He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Relatives of the factory workers were frantically looking for their loved ones. Sabina Yasmine said she saw the body of her daughter-in-law, who died in the fire, but had no trace of her son, who also worked at the factory.

"Oh, Allah, where's my soul? Where's my son?" wailed Yasmine, who works at another factory in the area. "I want the factory owner to be hanged. For him, many have died, many have gone."

Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.

Many workers who had taken shelter on the roof of the factory were rescued, but firefighters were unable to save those who were trapped inside, Mahbub said.

He said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors.

"The factory had three staircases, and all of them were down through the ground floor," Mahbub said. "So the workers could not come out when the fire engulfed the building."

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.

Many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.

Army soldiers and paramilitary border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene, Mahbub said. He would not say how many people were still missing.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the loss of so many lives in the blaze and asked authorities to conduct thorough search-and-rescue operations.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families.

Bangladesh's garment factories make clothes for brands including Wal-Mart, JC Penney, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Carrefour and Tesco.

Separately, a flyover under construction fell onto a busy market, leaving at least 14 people dead including three construction workers in southeastern city of Chittagong, an official said Sunday.

Local fire official Abdul Mannan said the concrete structure collapsed on Saturday night, and authorities recovered the bodies by Sunday morning from under the debris in the second-largest city after Dhaka.

Black Friday online sales top $1 billion

11 hrs.

In a positive sign for the U.S. economy, shoppers took advantage of deep discounts?both online and in?stores over the?Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Black Friday?online sales topped $1 billion for the first time, according to?comScore, which measures online behavior.

Amazon.com was the most-visited retail website on Black Friday. Wal-Mart's website was second, followed by sites run by Best Buy, Target and Apple, comScore noted.

E-commerce accounts for less than 10 percent of consumer spending in the United States. However, it is growing much faster than bricks-and-mortar retail as shoppers are lured by low prices, convenience, faster shipping and wide selection.

More brick-and-mortar stores were open on?Thanksgiving this year, with retailers such as Target, Sears and Toys R Us joining in, while others including Wal-Mart and Gap either extended their operating hours or had more stores doing business.

Traditionally, stores had waited until Black Friday, the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, to make their big push. ?

U.S. retailers' sales over the four-day holiday weekend increased an estimated 12.8 percent, according to?a survey from the National Retail Federation.

More than?35 million Americans visited retailers? stores and websites Thursday ? up from 29 million last year,?according to the?survey. Despite concerns that the early?Thanksgiving hours would cut into Black Friday results, nearly 89 million Americans still shopped on Black Friday -- up?3.1 percent over the 86.2 million who shopped that day last year.

After years of belt-tightening in a tough economy, Americans this year were?apparently in the mood to shop.?An estimated 139.4 million adults visited U.S. stores and websites from Thanksgiving through Sunday, up from 131 million last year, according to?the National Retail Federation. Total spending for the weekend rose to $59.1 billion from $52.4 billion last year.

?From green beans to great deals, millions of Americans found time this Thanksgiving to make the most of retailers? promotions and enjoy a special family holiday,? said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay.?

When accounting for people who shopped on more than one day, the total number of visits to stores and websites was 247 million, up from 226 million last year. Shoppers also spent more --?$423 compared to?$398 last year.

The survey, conducted Nov 23-24 by BIGinsight for NRF, polled 4,005 consumers and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.6 percent. The number of shoppers for Sunday is estimated.?

Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.?

?There?s no question that millions of people were drawn to retailers? aggressive online promotions this weekend, making sure to research and compare prices days in advance to ensure they were getting the best deal they could,? said BIGinsight Consumer Insights Director Pam Goodfellow in a statement. ?However, with shopper traffic increasing at department, discount, and clothing stores over the weekend, it?s clear that consumers still recognize Black Friday as one of the biggest shopping days of the year, as they have for decades.??

It's not clear yet whether strong Black Friday sales will weaken growth on Cyber Monday, which has been the biggest e-commerce day in the United States in recent years.

"Cyber Monday will be a big day, but not as much of a big day as it has been in the past," said Mia Shernoff, executive vice president for Chase Paymentech, a payment-processing unit of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. "Faster broadband Internet connections in the office used to drive this. But now many consumers have faster connections at home and smart phones and tablets -- they don't have to wait."?

Information from Reuters was included in this?report.?

BAE may close major shipyard - paper

LONDON (Reuters) - Defence contractor BAE Systems may close one of its major shipyards in Britain as it looks to balance capacity with future workloads, a top executive has told a newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

Nigel Whitehead, who is group managing director, programmes and support, told the Sunday Telegraph that BAE, which operates a shipyard in Portsmouth and two in Glasgow, "anticipate(s) that there will be a reduction in footprint".

"We anticipate ... that part of that might actually be the cessation of manufacturing at one of the sites," he was quoted as telling the paper. "We will be making decisions this year, so we have a number of weeks in which to do that."

The company is facing a drop in work once work on the two Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers are completed.

The paper said industry insiders believe BAE's base at Portsmouth is most at risk, with an estimated loss of 1,500 jobs. It said the Royal Navy's base at Portsmouth, where BAE also does repairs, is not at risk.

The news comes just weeks after talks between BAE and EADS on the world's largest defence and aviation merger collapsed.

"We continue to work closely with the Ministry of Defence to explore all possible options to determine how best to sustain the capability to deliver complex warships in the UK in the future," a spokeswoman for BAE told Reuters.

"This work is ongoing and we are committed to keeping our employees and trade unions informed as it progresses."

Accepting What? : Accepting Abundance ? Huangttjayde57's blog ...

Catholic Free Press

I admit that I wince a little at the title ?Accepting Abundance? because there is no doubt it has connotations of New Age promises of riches and prosperity, self-help advice for anyone willing to fall for it. But to me that phrase literally explains my path to conversion and the changes in my heart that led to changes in my mind.

In desiring to leave behind a terribly sinful past, I had difficulty accepting that I could be forgiven. I realized, though, that to refuse that mercy would be to refuse grace, to refuse Christ altogether, and I could not do that. So I prayed that I would humbly accept the abundances of life that I knew God wants us all to have.

As I accepted forgiveness, it changed my outlook on life. I began to see the world more objectively, as a gift, full of the beauty and goodness my heart longed for. I stopped pining for my relationships to be an unattainable ideal to make me happy, and instead accepted them for what they are, and I learned to embrace them, imperfections and all.

As I learned more about the Church, I discovered treasures to aid me in forming a conscience and pursuing goals in life. Each day I had that feeling you have when you are at the end of complex jig-saw puzzle, one little piece snaps into place and suddenly you see how to snap other pieces into place too, and soon you can see the bigger picture with clarity, and you can?t help but accept it because the vividness of the magnificent never-ending truth is right there before you.

As I accepted life, I accepted that abundance of being ?open to life? too. I accepted the gift of children, one right after another, and I soon learned that this meant accepting death too. Three miscarriages almost caused me to fear pregnancy enough to avoid it completely, but then I saw beyond that too. If we cling to the promises in the Creed, we know that life is everlasting. Slowly, though still not yet, the sadness is replaced with a deep and abiding joy. Regardless of the empty ache in my arms and heart, there are more children to love because they still exist.

In gratitude, each day is a day to ask God to use my life for His glory, and the more I do that, the more I realize that, as silly as it might sound, I am living that title ? accepting abundance ? in ways I never imagined. Happy Thanksgiving.

Parrots imitate individuals when addressing them

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Whether living with pirates or in the wild, parrots have exceptional abilities to mimic the sounds they hear. One species, the orange-fronted conure, may have evolved this ability in order to communicate with specific individuals in other flocks, according to research published November 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Thorsten Balsby from the University of Aarhus, Denmark and colleagues from the University of Copenhagen.

In the wild, orange-fronted conures live in dynamic flocks where individuals flit in and out, so each parrot encounters many different individuals every day. Each animal also has its own unique call. Both in the wild and in the researcher's experiments, parrots that heard an imitation of their own calls responded more frequently and faster to the calling individual than parrots that did not hear this imitation. Based on these observations, the authors suggest that the parrots may have evolved their abilities as mimics so they could 'begin a conversation' with a specific individual by mimicking their call.

Balance Exercises | Shannon Miller Lifestyle

Posted In: Fitness : 11/23/2012

Author: Shannon Miller Lifestyle

Any kind of balance exercise is going to challenge your core.

Adding movement will challenge and strengthen the muscle groups and the mind, as it takes focus to balance.

Balance takes practice. If you do not get it the first time, just keep trying. You will also find that some days are better than others. That is normal. It all depends on what our bodies and minds are going through that day. Take this kind of exercise as it comes, not always expecting perfection.

For an added challenge, try a balance disk or a Bosu ball to do these and other balance exercises on. These systems will strengthen muscle and connective tissue around the joints, challenge the core, and help us improve general posture and alignment.

SML Diet Tip: For a flat tummy, think clean.

Clean foods that have lots of fiber get rid of unnecessary fluids and fats that get stuck in our system. In general, you want 30 grams of fiber in a day. So, find out what your fiber intake is per day. If it is under 5 grams, shoot for 5 first. Gradually start increasing your fiber.

Do NOT go from nothing to 30 grams today! You will probably suffer some serious stomach pains, just from the rash adjustment your body will have to make. Think in increments of 5 grams. Start with where you are, and increase by 5 in a couple of days. Let your body adjust and then increase by 5 more. You will get to 30.

Bonus: that fibrous food will fill you up and keep you from eating things you don?t need!
