US stock market reopens after a two-day shutdown

NEW YORK (AP) ? Wall Street is back in business.

Traffic is snarled, streets flooded, subways idle and power out in many parts of Manhattan and beyond, but the New York Stock Exchange opened trading without a hitch Wednesday after a historic two-day shutdown caused by Superstorm Sandy.

At 9:30 a.m., right on schedule, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg rang the opening bell, then gave a hopeful thumbs-up. Cheers rose from traders on the trading floor below, falsely rumored to be flooded, but dry Wednesday morning, and festive.

"It's good for the city, good for country, it's good for everyone to get back to work," the mayor told CNBC moments later while leaving the exchange building at 11 Wall Street.

The stakes were high for trading to resume.

Wall Street traders and strategists were worried that a third day of delay would have meant more pent-up demand from customers to buy and sell stocks, resulting in a surge of orders that could send the market on wild ride. There were also doubts that there would be enough people in offices trading stocks for the market to match buyers and sellers smoothly.

But trading was placid from the start Wednesday, and much of the worry ebbed away.

"I've lived through a lot of events ? crashes, mini-crashes, events of mother nature, man-made events, terrible events like 9/11," said Ted Weisberg, president of Seaport Securities, 72, shortly after the opening bell. "Somehow or other the markets continue."

The last time the exchange closed for two consecutive days because of weather was during the Blizzard of 1888 ? 124 years ago.

With power out in much of downtown Manhattan, the NYSE building Wednesday was an isolated hub of activity in a largely deserted and darkened neighborhood. The company that runs the exchange, NYSE Euronext, used backup generators to power its operations, including turning on the red, white and blue lights trained on its six-columned facade.

To Jonathan D. Corpina, a broker who made his way to the building by flashlight early in the morning, it was a welcome sight.

"Walking up this pitch-black street ... with the red, white and blue lights going, it was clear this was the only building in downtown Manhattan that was open," said Corpina, senior managing partner of Meridian Equity Partners. He added, referring to the opening: "It was important to have gotten that message out there that we are here, we are accepting orders, it's business as usual."

The opening followed days of scrambling by NYSE officials to make sure power, telecom connections and computers would be ready for a full trading day. The exchange organized car pools to get people to work, set aside special parking for those driving in and booked hotel rooms nearby for traders and other staffers. And it filled fuel tanks for its generators to the brim.

"We're not going to have power in lower Manhattan until probably the weekend, so we've got to make sure that our generator continues to be topped up," Larry Leibowitz, NYSE's chief operating officer, said from the exchange floor after the opening. "There's just lots and lots of details that we've spent the last 36 hours running through."

Leibowitz said that his biggest concern had been ensuring enough people who worked both at, and for, the exchange could make it into work. On Tuesday, NYSE ran a mock trading session with its all-electronic Arca trading system just in case too few people showed up.

In the end, more people made it in than the exchange had expected.

Many workers on the trading floor use the subway to get downtown, but that was not an option Wednesday. Superstorm Sandy flooded many tunnels, leaving the 108-year-old subway system with its worst damage in history. New York's governor, Andrew Cuomo, said limited subway service will resume in New York City on Thursday.

"With subways down, I was wondering if people were even going to get to work today," said Randy Frederick, a managing director at Charles Schwab watching the opening from a TV at his Austin, Texas, office. "But obviously enough did. The markets opened stronger than many expected."

The two-day closing came just as big U.S. companies were reporting their quarterly earnings. That forced dozens of companies to postpone their reports to later this week, adding another wrinkle to the trading days ahead.

But trading volume Wednesday was normal, and it wound up being a relatively quiet day after all.

The Dow Jones industrial average gave up an early gain and wound up closing down just 10.75 points, at 13,096.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged down 0.22 point at 1,412.16 and the Nasdaq composite lost 10.72 points to 2,977.23.

SEE MIB3 TWO WEEKS EARLY! - Motherhood on the Rocks?

Before our daughter was born, my husband and I used to go to the movies at least once a month. Giant popcorn (with extra butter), giant soda, gummy worms. In the two years since she?s been born, we?ve visited our local theater exactly zero times. That?s right, not once. Yeah, these days we?re a ?wait till the DVD? kind of family, and we?re perfectly content with our new stay-at-home status.

One of the movies that I really wanted to see in theaters earlier this year is Men in Black 3 starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Of course, we didn?t see it in the theater, which is why I?m looking forward to its DVD release on November 30. But here?s the exciting part: I found a way to get the movie a full two weeks before the DVD release date by pre-ordering the DVD at Walmart and streaming the movie via Walmart?s digital movie service at Vudu.com.

If you?re new to the whole digital streaming process, don?t worry ? it?s super easy! I?ll write more in a future entry about how to stream movies to your computer or your TV when we have our MIB3 watching party, but the process of pre-ordering the DVD and signing up for the Vudu service is pretty easy, too.MIB 3You?ll find the pre-order copy of Men in Black 3 among the other new releases in the Electronics or Entertainment section at Walmart. It?s available in both DVD and Blu-ray and if you have any trouble at all finding it, just ask a Walmart representative (like I did) and they?ll point you in the right direction.

Once you get the movie home, you?ll follow the simple instructions inside the pre-order box to activate your digital version and get your hard copy of MIB3. Vudu allows you to watch the movie two weeks before its release, starting November 16 via your iPad, PC, xBox360, Playstation 3 or through your Blue-ray player.?And by the way, Vudu is also compliant with Ultraviolet (UV), a service which stores your digital movies ?in the cloud? so you can access them anywhere at any time. Here?s a little overview of how Vudu works.Vudu.comTo get started, simply follow the 3 easy steps found in your pre-order box! You?ll enter to code to get your free hard copy of the DVD, register as a Vudu user if you?re not already registered (registration is free and new members get a free movie credit!), and watch the exclusive content Keeping it Surreal: The Visual FX of MIB3 if you like. This is where you?ll go to watch the digital version as well.MIB 3The registration process for vudu.com is quick and painless. MIB3After you register, just sit back and relax until November 16 to watch the digital version of the movie! Of course, your pre-order of MIB3 also includes the hard copy DVD, which will be mailed to your home on or around the November 30 release date. That?s right, you get the digital version of the movie two weeks before the DVD release date and a DVD copy, all for less than $20. That?s a pretty good deal if you ask me!

For more information, check out Men in Black on Facebook or Twitter, or visit the MIB3 section of Vudu.com. Or follow #seemib3 on Twitter. Also feel free to check out my Google+ photo album which offers detailed pictures and captions about my Men in Black 3 pre-order and Vudu process.

Spicy Sprouted Lentil Soup | The Coconut Mama

?

I started my real food journey almost five years ago. My body was in need of a lot of healing at that time. I had eaten a very poor standard American diet full of?processed?foods for many years. When I began my journey I decided to become a vegan. I did well on my vegan diet. I lost 58 pounds, my skin cleared up and I felt healthy for the first time in my life.?

Today I am no longer a vegan. I do still cook many of my favorite vegan dishes on a regular basis, though. One of my favorite vegan dishes is lentil soup. I would eat lentil soup ?almost every day when I first started my vegan diet.

I make this soup much more healthier than I use to. I use fresh ingredients (no cans) and I use sprouted lentils. Sprouting increases the nutrients of lentils and makes them easier to digest.

How To Sprout Lentils

Soak 2 cups of lentils in 4 cups of water. Allow lentils to soak for 6-8 hours (I usually do this overnight). ?Rinse the soaked lentils and place them in a jar. I like to use a sprouting lid on my jar. This makes sprouted a lot easier. Rinse the lentils every 6-8 hours. The lentils will begin to sprout during the first 24 hours of sprouting. Once lentils have sprouted you can keep them in the refrigerator to use in your recipes.

A Note About Broth

I prefer to use homemade broth because it is healthier and full of minerals. I highly recommend you use homemade chicken bone broth or mineral rich vegetable broth (recipe coming soon).

Spicy Sprouted Lentil Soup

Preparation Time: 30 minutes (not including time for sprouting) Number of Servings: 6 ?

Equipment Needed

  • 1 medium to large size pot
  • food processor or blender
  • sharp knife for cutting veggies

Ingredients

  • 4 cups sprouted lentils
  • 6 cups mineral rich vegetable broth (recipe?coming?soon!) or homemade bone broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1 green chili or?jalapeno?pepper, chopped (add more or less according to your spicy preference)
  • 1 small red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 medium carrot, diced or shredded

Toppings (optional)

  • shredded raw cheese or?pepper?jack cheese
  • onions, chopped
  • salsa
  • sour cream
  • avocado

Directions

Pour ?broth, lentils and seasonings in a medium size pot. Bring to a boil and simmer until lentils are tender, about 10 minutes. Remove 2 cups of lentils and puree them in food processor or blender. Add lentil puree back to soup. Add diced carrots and bell pepper to soup. Continue to cook until veggies are tender, about 20 minutes. Remove and discard bay leaves before serving.

Top each bowl with favorite toppings. Serve with Baked Coconut Oil Corn Tortilla Chips and a slice of lime.

PFT: 'Outside chance' Amendola plays vs. Pats

New York Jets v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow sat down for a one-on-one interview with Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, and one of the first things he mentioned was: ?We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that.?

Mission accomplished.

Tebow largely danced around the notion of his frustration at not playing a bigger role, taking the good teammate role while admitting he?d prefer to do more.

?I don?t know if that?s not being a team guy,? Tebow said. ?I think that I try to be open and honest in talking to the media. Obviously try to be honest. But sometimes you don?t have to talk about everything. We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that. Why make it something if it?s not??

Tebow?s squeaky clean image keeps him from appearing bitter and divisive, while clearly wishing he could do more.

?Obviously, I?m a competitor,? he said. ?And you get frustrated with losing. When we win, I?m excited about winning. That way I get the ups and downs of a football season. But I also know that it?s never as good as it seems, it?s never as bad as seems. You always have to stay focused because you never know for me.

?My role, it could expand. So you just got to always be ready.?

Asked if it was fair to starter Mark Sanchez to have such a popular player as the backup, Tebow replied: ?I feel like one of the reasons they brought me here was to help make him better by being someone that could come in and convert some first downs, make some plays, do different things. So, hopefully our being together will benefit both of us.?

Mehta joked with Tebow about running for public office, and he probably should. Because his ability to take potentially controversial topics and make them innocuous is as impressive as anything he?s done on the field as a Jet.

Kaspersky Tweaks Channel Strategy for Small Businesses in India

Added on Oct 23, 2012 by By Yogesh Gupta

Kaspersky is streamlining its internal teams and channel partners to target the ?S? of the SMBs in India.

The security vendor will now target this colossal market of organizations with 'up to 25 users' through a partner-led B2B route, differing from its earlier B2C approach. "As per industry reports, there are over 12.8 million small businesses (15 to 25 users) in India, and a focused B2B approach through committed channel partners will help us effectively address this segment ,? informed Suk Ling Gun, corporate sales director - APAC , Kaspersky Lab Asia.

?We are confident to capture at least one percent of this colossal market which is around over one lakh new customers across India,? said Gun. A part of the newly launched ?Green Team? Partner program, the Kaspersky Small Office Suite (KSOS) for Windows-based machines is available in two different variants: 15 users plus 2 file servers, and 25 users plus 3 file servers. ?The cost of KSOS for small business will be almost 40% lower than our enterprise solutions,? added Gun.

The affordable option for small businesses, however, does not constitute just basic security offerings for the users, assured Gun. Kaspersky has seen to that KSOS is a bundle of good, comprehensive security features than just being an anti-virus and anti-spam solution. ?It encompasses features such as encryption, web filtering, and bandwidth management. KSOS offers backup features, and the security updates consume minimal bandwidth. This is crucial for a small organization which has minimal IT staff and limited bandwidth?, said Gun.

The B2B route will be leveraged through Kaspersky?s existing set of distributors: eCaps Computers (South), TechMatrix Infotech (West), SEA Infonet (East and North), and their set of channel partners in India. ?To reach the wide number of prospective customers, we will work with existing partners and also appoint new channels who specialize in sales to small businesses across their geographies,? said Altaf Halde, head-South Asia, Kaspersky Lab.

?The broad-based B2B route will address the security needs of a large number of small businesses across India. For channel partners, KSOS will ensure customer stickiness and shorter sales cycle,? commented Halde.

Kaspersky is further planning to engage with distributors and regional partners through Kaspersky?s local teams to reach smaller cities too. The small businesses across Indian states such as Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu are fast beginning to adopt security solutions, according to Gun.

Kaspersky globally has been increasing its focus on the enterprise and SMB segments, apart from its widely accepted, successful brand across the consumer segment. ?Since small businesses form a bulk and vital part of India?s SMB segment, the changed strategy through a dedicated partner ecosystem will make us their preferred security vendor,? added Halde.

Mo Bro Chefs Menu #1: Spiced Crab, Beef Bourgignon & Coffee ...

A three course 'Movember' dinner party menu.

Nowadays, November is more synonymous with facial hair than the infamous Gunpowder Plot conspirator (although he had a cracking 'tache too). Since 2003, men have been growing their 'Mo's' in a month long charity event to raise money and awareness for men's health. This year, several top chefs are supporting the cause by growing moustaches and contributing some tasty looking recipes to the Movember cookbook Bring It On Home, sharing knowledge, tips and their favourite recipes. In the run up to Movember, we are publishing a series of three course dinner party menus from the book, for you to recreate at home, starting with Menu #1 below. Let the hairy games begin!

Starter: Spiced crab and avocado on toast

by David Johnson
Head chef, Then Admiral Codrington, London?

INGREDIENTS (serving 6)

400g white crab meat
? bunch of coriander
2 red chillies
1 lemon
100ml extra virgin olive oil
3 ripe green avocados
2 cloves of garlic
2 bunches of watercress
1 loaf sourdough bread

METHOD
? De-seed the red chillies and chop finely along with the coriander. In a bowl, flake the crab meat and add the chopped coriander and chilli. Zest the lemon and squeeze the juice of half a lemon and add to the meat with 25ml of the oil. Season to taste and place in the fridge until needed.
? Peel and remove the stones from the avocados, place in a food processor with the juice of half a lemon, garlic and the remainder of the oil and blend until smooth.
? Slice the sourdough into thick slices and grill both sides on a griddle pan until well toasted. Spread the avocado pur?e on and then spoon the crab meat on top. Drizzle with a little oil and top with watercress and serve with wedges of lemon.

Main Course:?Beef Bourgignon, potato & parsnip mash

by Luca and Guglielmo D'Alfonso
The Fumbally, Dublin

INGREDIENTS?(serving 6)

Bourgignon:
1kg shin of beef, diced
1 stick of cinnamon
1 bay leaf
2 onions
1 leek
4 shallots
3 cloves of garlic
4 carrots, peeled
4 celery sticks
2 400g tins of peeled plum tomatoes
100g fresh, good quality mixed mushrooms
1 bunch parsley
50g smoked bacon lardons
Sprigs of thyme or rosemary
100g plain flour
1 bottle Chianti or Barolo
Extra virgin olive oil

Creamy parsnip and potato mash with red onions:
5 large rooster potatoes
4 parsnips
2 red onions
The remainder of the red wine from the Bourguignon recipe
20ml balsamic vinegar
1 tsp sugar
50g butter
50g of single cream
A little grated nutmeg
Olive oil, for frying.

METHOD

For the Bourgignon:
? Finely chop the onion, shallots and leek. Roughly chop the carrots and celery. In a stewing pot, heat 50ml of extra virgin olive oil. Add two cloves of the peeled garlic and the smoked bacon lardons. Cook for 3 minutes on a medium heat then add all the chopped vegetables and cook on a low heat for a further 15 minutes.
? Meanwhile, thinly slice the mushrooms, remaining garlic and the parsley stalks. Put a little olive oil in a frying pan and sweat the garlic and parsley together, taking care not to burn the garlic. Add the mushrooms after a few minutes and cook them on a low heat until softened.
? Lightly coat the diced shin of beef with the plain flour and add it into the stewing pot along with the thyme, shaking off the excess flour before adding it in. When the meat is seared completely, add the cinnamon stick, bay leaf, and mushroom mix from the frying pan, two tins of plum tomatoes and 400ml of the wine. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the pot to the boil and then cover and put in a preheated oven at 180?C for at least 2.5 hours. You will know it is ready when the meat is so tender that it can be broken up easily with a fork. Remove from oven when cooked, check the seasoning and adjust if necessary.

For the parsnip and potato mash:
? Peel the potatoes and parsnip. Chop roughly and bring to the boil together in salty water.
? While the potato and parsnip are boiling, chop the red onions and fry them with a dash of olive oil. When softened, add the remainder of the wine, the balsamic and the sugar. Simmer it until it has reduced and tastes sweet.
? When the potato and parsnip are cooked, drain them in a colander allowing them to steam for a few minutes torelease their moisture. Put them back into the pot with the caramelised onions, butter, cream, salt and pepperthen grate in a little nutmeg. Blend everything together with a hand blender. Season to taste.

Pudding: Coffee bean panna cotta, espresso syrup

by Anthony Power
Moustache Chef, London

This dessert is very easy to make and can be made the day before your dinner party. It also serves as a great substitute for serving guests coffee after the meal, which, unless you have an espresso machine, can be a hassle ? and no one likes bad coffee.

INGREDIENTS?(serving 6)

Panna cotta:
150ml double cream
150ml milk
25g fresh coffee beans
50g sugar
2 leaves of gelatin (you can get this from most supermarkets)
Biscotti or shortbread biscuits to serve

Syrup:
20ml glucose (you can get this from most supermarkets)
50g sugar
150ml very strong coffee, preferably espresso

METHOD
For the panna cotta:
? In a bowl, soak the gelatin with a little cold water.
? In a saucepan, heat the cream, milk, sugar and the coffee beans on a low heat, slowly bring to the boil and allow to infuse for 30 minutes. Squeeze the water from the gelatin and add the softened leaves to the cream mixture, stirring thoroughly. Strain through a sieve and pour into small moulds or pots. Set in the fridge for at least 3 hours.

For the coffee syrup:
Place all ingredients in a saucepan and reduce over a low heat until thick and syrupy.
Hint ? take the coffee syrup out of the fridge a few hours before your dessert course so it warms to room temperature and softens to a thick syrup.

Debate coach: Romney walked into 'bayonets' line

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Todd Graham: Candidates had many areas of agreement in third presidential debate
  • He says agreeing is a good strategy to build credibility in debate; Romney missed chance
  • When Romney was asked about paying for $2 trillion in military spending, he dodged, he says
  • Graham: It let Obama deliver a line that would stick; made Romney seem naive on spending

Editor's note: Todd Graham is the director of debate at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He has coached his teams to national championships and has been honored with the Ross K. Smith national debate coach of the year award. Graham has analyzed presidential debates for five elections.

(CNN) -- There were many areas of agreement on past policies Monday night in the presidential debate. The problem for Mitt Romney was with the one major disagreement on future foreign policy.

I've always taught my debate students that in any argument, whether at home, at the office, or in public debates, it's important to find areas of agreement.

There are two reasons for this. The first is so that you build up your credibility for when you need it on more important issues. In a debate, if you've already agreed with your opponent on some topics, the audience is more likely to believe you when you finally disagree. And the second reason for agreement is that it lets you pick your battles. Explicitly agreeing with your opponent is a terrific and underused debating strategy that lets you succeed when arguing for bigger, more significant issues.

Opinion: Obama in command; Romney plays it safe

HIDE CAPTION

It was 40 minutes into the foreign policy debate before I heard an area of disagreement on future foreign policy direction. The problem was that Romney had not actually built up his credibility by agreeing with President Obama on any specific future policies. It was painfully obvious. In failing to openly agree when possible, Romney lacked the credibility needed when that first big disagreement came. And when he finally did disagree? Best said by the Holy Grail Knight in the Indiana Jones movie: "He chose -- poorly."

The question was posed to Romney on how he would pay for his proposed $2 trillion increase in military spending, and he flat out didn't answer it. He was busy finishing his previous answer. So by the time it was the president's turn, Obama actually said, "You should have answered the question."

Obama then asserted that the United States spends more on its military than the next 10 countries combined. That's a great attention grabber. By the time Romney finally answered, he simply said we needed a stronger military, and the Navy needs more ships because it has fewer ships than it did in 1916.

But Obama countered with the most memorable line of the night. "We also have fewer horses and bayonets." Obama's debating point was that the nature of our military has changed. He continued by saying that the U.S. has things like submarines and aircraft carriers that should suffice, and reminded viewers that the nation needed to study what its threats are and put money into things like cybersecurity and space. Obama said that the military neither wants nor has asked for this extra $2 trillion.

Opinion: Romney endorses Obama's national security policies

This was terrible for Romney for three reasons. First, it was the original area of real disagreement, and Romney couldn't afford to be bested. Second, no matter what he may actually know, Romney looked like a neophyte when it comes to military spending, as though he were repeating old Republican talking points. Viewers could be left unsure whether he knew what century this is.

And finally, it's two freaking trillion dollars! They both talked about the budget deficit and the need to balance the budget, and over three debates, this -- $2 trillion on military spending -- was the biggest difference on offer. Axing Big Bird would net a President Romney next to nothing in savings, but adding $2 trillion to defense sounded excessive, especially if it's true that the U.S. already spends more than the next 10 countries combined. Point Obama.

I pored over my notes. The candidates had some other differences on future policies, such as who could be a better BFF to Israel (arguably, with his relationships in Israel, Romney might be, but he showed no actual specifics on how his policies would differ from Obama's) and what represents the greatest threat to America (Obama said terrorism, with some China economic arguments, while Romney said a nuclear Iran; but each man failed in Monday night's debate to show why this difference was important). But the topic I couldn't forget was defense spending.

Obama also had a theme in the debate, and he played it more often than the melody in Ravel's "Bolero." The president continually said that Romney sends mixed messages and that he's all over the map. Obama smartly tied this to specific comments from Romney's past (examples were Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Libya) and used Romney's own words against him.

Opinion: Was Obama too relentless with Romney?

Obama repeatedly chided him, saying that Romney needs to be clear in what he says and what he means, while reminding us that in a president, we need steady and thoughtful leadership. This was the president's best debate when referring to Romney's ever-changing positions, since he actually tied it to important foreign policy issues and the real challenge of being a commander in chief.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Todd Graham.

Home Improvement Tips to Increase the Value of Your Home ...

Home Improvement Tips to Increase the Value of Your Home

Published: Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

By Rudy Lira Kusuma, REALTOR?

Buying a home may be a dream, but the initial purchase is only the introduction to that dream. There?s always something about your house that could be a little better, a little closer to perfect. Now, with a little planning, you can bring your home closer to your dream of perfection.
Reasoning Your Redo
Many home improvement projects begin with someone in the household saying, ?Wouldn?t it be nice ??? Start by evaluating your needs. Most homeowners consider home improvements for one of these reasons.
? You need to update the out-of-date.
? You need to replace fixtures or appliances.
? You?re selling your home. You want to be sure you?ll get top dollar from the sale of your home, and that may be the rallying cry for some home improvement projects.
? You?re staying put. You thought about moving, but now you realize that improving your present home is a better option.
? Your family has grown and you need more space.
Improving to Move or Improving to Stay
You need to evaluate your plans carefully if you?re improving your home to put it on the market. Cutting corners could hurt rather than help your prospects, but you don?t want to go overboard either. Potential buyers may not want to pay for the extras you have included, such as a hot tub or pool. It?s best to keep changes simple.
Here?s a list of remodeling projects that buyers are likely to find valuable:
? Adding or remodeling a bath
? Improving the kitchen
? Adding a new room
? Landscaping

Keep the value of other homes in the area in mind whenever you consider improvements. Your home?s value should be no more than 20% above the average. That means a $10,000 kitchen improvement project might be a better idea than a $10,000 hot tub, especially if no other homes in your area have hot tubs.

Home Maintenance
Unfortunately, some home improvement projects get started because something is broken. A leaky plumbing fixture may be the first step to a major bath remodeling. After all, if the tub has to be replaced, why not do the whole room?
While that?s certainly one reason to remodel, you?ll generally want to avoid basing your home improvement projects on immediate need. Proper maintenance will help to minimize problems.
Hiring Help
Let?s face it, home projects can be expensive. You may be tempted to tackle them yourself as a way to save money. For small projects, that may be a smart move. However, large home improvement projects are better left to the pros. Keep in mind, do-it-yourself jobs generally take more time and you?re responsible for obtaining the necessary permits and inspections.
Hiring people who have experience can save you money and time, too. For example, these professionals can help you get a custom look using stock products, and that can be a significant savings. Getting something done right?the first time?will give you value that lasts for years.
Be House Smart: You?ll be happiest with the outcome of a home improvement project if you plan carefully and do your homework. Armed with the information in this article and a realistic idea of your needs and budget, you?ll find your home getting closer to your dream of perfection.

Whale 'makes human-like sounds'

Researchers in the US have been shocked to discover a beluga whale whose vocalisations were remarkably close to human speech.

While dolphins have been taught to mimic the pattern and durations of sounds in human speech, no animal has spontaneously tried such mimicry.

But researchers heard a nine-year-old whale named NOC make sounds octaves below normal, in clipped bursts.

The researchers outline in Current Biology just how NOC did it.

The first mystery, though, was figuring out where the sound was coming from.

When a diver at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in California surfaced saying, "Who told me to get out?" the researchers there knew they had another example on their hands.

The whales are known as "canaries of the sea" for their high-pitched chirps, but while a number of anecdotal reports have described whales making human-like speech, none had ever been recorded.

Once they identified NOC as the culprit, they caught it on tape.

They found that vocal bursts averaged about three per second, with pauses reminiscent of human speech. Analysis of the recordings showed that the frequencies within them were spread out into "harmonics" in a way very unlike whales' normal vocalisations and more like those of humans.

They then rewarded NOC for the speech-like sounds to teach him to make them on command and fitted him with a pressure transducer within his nasal cavity, where sounds are produced, to monitor just what was going on.

They found that he was able to rapidly change the pressure within his nasal cavity to produce the sounds.

To amplify the comparatively low-frequency parts of the vocalisations, he over-inflated what is known at the vestibular sac in his blowhole - which normally acts to stop water entering the lungs.

In short, the mimicry was no easy task for NOC.

"Our observations suggest that the whale had to modify its vocal mechanics in order to make the speech-like sounds," said Sam Ridgway, president of the National Marine Mammal Foundation and lead author on the paper.

"The sounds we heard were clearly an example of vocal learning by the white whale."

Voters In R.I., Ore., Md. To Vote On Casinos ? CBS Baltimore

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) ? The slot machines at Newport Grand chirp just like the ones in Vegas. The winners exult and the losers shrug just as they do in Atlantic City. But ask for the blackjack tables and you?ll be directed to a video game screen with a smiling, virtual dealer. The nearest table action is 50 miles away in Connecticut.

?Wouldn?t it be great to see a real person standing there?? asks Cathy Rayner, a Newport Grand employee and president of the union representing the 200 workers at the slot parlor in Rhode Island?s famed seaside resort. ?That could be a person earning good benefits.?

Rhode Island may soon grant her wish. Along with those in Oregon and Maryland, voters here will decide Nov. 6 whether to authorize an expansion of legal gambling in an increasingly cluttered and competitive market that now includes casinos, slot parlors or tribal facilities in 40 states.

Maryland is in the midst of a bruising battle over a proposal to authorize table games at its casinos, and to approve a new gambling facility close to Washington. Campaign spending for and against the ballot question is nearly $40 million, exceeding the amount spent in the state?s 2006 governor?s race. The proposal is being fought by a company that operates a casino in nearby West Virginia.

Las Vegas and Atlantic City once enjoyed a corner on the casino business until one state after another moved to welcome casinos, riverboat gambling or slot parlors. Despite a dip in gambling revenues during the Great Recession, states continue to place bets on expanded gambling.

Commercial casinos contributed nearly $8 billion to state and local governments in 2011, according to the American Gaming Association.

Ohio, Maryland, New York and Kansas have added casinos in the past two years. Massachusetts authorized casinos last year. Pennsylvania?s first casinos opened in 2006, and the state is now the nation?s second-largest gambling market after Las Vegas.

?It?s like a casino arms race where one state has slots, so the other state adds slots, then the first state adds a casino,? said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. ?We?re running out of states that don?t have gambling. The question is whether there?s a saturation point. We?re going to find out because the market is going to tell us.?

There are signs that the push for more casinos may be ebbing, at least in some states.

A casino referendum in Oregon appears to be failing before the voters even weigh in. Last week two Canadian companies pushing plans to open Oregon?s first privately owned casino announced they would spend no additional money on their campaign, saying ?it appears ? not enough Oregon voters are ready to add a private casino to the state?s gaming options.?

Oregon already has several casinos operated by Indian tribes. The proposed casino would be located in the Portland metro area and would also include a hotel and waterpark. Its developers spent $5 million on campaign ads promising jobs and education funding. But the proposal was a long shot even before the state?s tribes opposed it: Two years ago a casino referendum won just 32 percent of the vote here.

Rhode Island has long resisted efforts to authorize casino games, though its two slot parlors contribute about $300 million a year to state coffers. Combined with state lottery proceeds, that?s the state?s third-largest source of revenue. Voters here last rejected a casino referendum in 2006, but supporters of this year?s push say times have changed.

Next-door Massachusetts authorized casinos this year, though none have yet opened. Twin River and Newport Grand say competition from those facilities will threaten their business and the revenue they create for the state.

Local and state leaders say expanded gambling could mean more jobs and economic activity for a state with 10.5 percent unemployment, the second-highest jobless rate in the nation. The ballot questions have the support of Gov. Lincoln Chafee and, importantly, Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, a Newport Democrat and a one-time opponent of casinos.

Twin River and Newport Grand have spent more than $4.3 million on their campaigns for the ballot questions, which must pass statewide and in the host communities. Of that total, Twin River?s campaign organization had spent $3.9 million.

John Taylor Jr., chairman of the Twin River board of directors, said his facility stands to lose hundreds of jobs if the referendum fails, but could add hundreds if it?s approved. He said the slot parlor, just south of the Massachusetts line, could begin offering poker and blackjack as early as next summer if the ballot question is approved, giving it a significant head start over Massachusetts, where casinos are still years away from opening.

The rush to capitalize on gambling has critics warning that states are chasing after an increasingly small piece of the gambling pie ? and at the expense of bettors and their families.

?They keep saying `jobs, jobs, jobs,? but who is going to pay these salaries?? asked the Rev. Eugene McKenna, chairman of Citizens Concerned about Casino Gambling, a group opposing the ballot questions in Rhode Island. ?It?s not pennies from heaven. It?s hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who can?t afford to lose it.?

McKenna said a casino in Newport would forever alter the city now known for its historic seaside location, its Gilded Age mansions and upscale tourism.

To Diane Hurley, chief executive and co-owner of Newport Grand, the referendum is about keeping her family business afloat. Hurley?s father opened the facility nearly 40 years ago as a venue for jai alai. On a tour of the cavernous slot parlor she greets her employees and many patrons by name. She never asked for permission to offer table games, until the prospect of casinos in Massachusetts forced her to reconsider.

?Massachusetts kept threatening and threatening to do it, but then it became a reality and it wasn?t `maybe? anymore,? Hurley said.

THE RACE: After final debate, a mad rush to home

After Monday's final debate, just two weeks remain. Expect President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to supercharge their ground games in a last-ditch effort to close the deal with voters.

Tightening polls suggest neither one has been able to complete the job yet.

Polls often shrink just before a presidential election as undecided voters jump off the fence. And late-deciders often break for the challenger when an incumbent is running.

Debates have played an outsized role this year ? both in deciding the Republican primaries and now in bringing the presidential choice into sharper focus for many Americans.

But with no further debates and barring an unforeseen "October surprise," one of the few remaining uncertainties is the government's release of this month's jobs report just four days before the election.

The September report showed a sharp unemployment rate drop to 7.8 percent, dipping under 8 percent for the first time since the start of Obama's presidency. Was that an aberration or is the jobs picture really improving?

The October report could tell us ? although it won't matter to the many who have already voted early.

Romney joked that Obama's latest campaign slogan is "you're better off than you were four weeks ago."

Falling jobless rates helped both Presidents Ronald Reagan and Franklin D. Roosevelt win reelection, even though unemployment rates were still high ? but dropping. Momentum counts for a lot in politics.

Unemployment declined over the past year in eight of nine battleground states. Ohio added the most jobs. Wisconsin was the only battleground state to lose jobs.

But Romney's selection of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate is helping to make the state more competitive for Republicans.

Vice President Joe Biden campaigned Monday in Ohio and Ryan in Colorado ? both essential battlegrounds.

Life in Uruguay: legal abortion and pot dealing - Home ? Other ...

MONTEVIDEO (AP) ? Uruguayans used to call their country the Switzerland of Latin America, but its faded grey capital seems a bit more like Amsterdam now that its congress has legalized abortion and is drawing up plans to sell government-grown marijuana.

Both measures would be unthinkable in many other countries. Cuba is the only other nation in the region that makes first-trimester abortions accessible to all women, and no country in the world produces and sells pot for drug users to enjoy.

But President Jose "Pepe" Mujica, a flower-farming former leftist guerrilla, vowed to sign whatever bill congress could settle on that can minimize the 30,000 illegal abortions his government says Uruguayan women suffer annually.

And while lawmakers have yet to debate pot sales, Mujica's ruling Broad Front coalition staked its ground in August by openly declaring that the drug war has failed. Smoking pot ? if not growing and selling it ? is already legal in Uruguay, and supplying the weed is a $30 million business, the government said.

This is democracy "a la Uruguaya" ? the Uruguayan way ? a phrase that reflects both the pride and the unmet promises of a society where finding common ground is a highly shared value, in stark contrast to many other countries where voters are divided by us-and-them politics.

Such outsized respect for the democratic process has enabled the country of 3.4 million people wedged between Argentina and Brazil to reach consensus on many issues that have stymied bigger and richer nations, from reforming health care to providing free university educations, to setting ambitious renewable energy goals. By embracing compromises, Uruguay has managed to hold onto its middle class through repeated economic crises, and pass laws that have consistently improved its citizens' quality of life.

But Uruguayans are increasingly concluding that Mujica has been too conciliatory ? too aloof ? and what they need now is more hands-on management. They love his crotchedy homespun humor and his man-of-the-people image, but they say Uruguay could benefit from a bit more decisiveness, historian Gerardo Caetano said.

Mujica, who entered politics after spending 14 years in prison during Uruguay's dictatorship, is an unusual leader by any standard.

He gives away 90 percent of his salary, doesn't have a bank account, drives a 41-year-old Volkswagen and never wears a tie. Now 77 and nearing the end of his five-year term, he has been talking a lot lately about stepping back and finding the joy in simple things, reflecting a personal style that goes to extremes of austerity.

"Mujica is a very strange, singular figure and yet he expresses this singular desire that Uruguayans in general have," Caetano said during an interview in his Montevideo apartment, where thousands of books spilled off the shelves. "Uruguayans like having unusual politicians, but they don't like authoritarians. They don't want leaders who are remote or confrontational."

"In Argentina, government is whatever the president says it is. Here, no president defines his performance without negotiation, and especially not Mujica. He really doesn't like to give orders. He doesn't want to be the chief," Caetano said. "In Uruguay, imposing things just doesn't work."

Creating a police state to take on drug traffickers would be anathema to Uruguayans, who have long been among the most secular, socially liberal and highly educated people in Latin America. Instead, the government hopes to drive traffickers out of business by providing a better service to drug users.

And in another reflection of Uruguay's national character, both the abortion and marijuana initiatives are intended to exclude foreigners. Only Uruguayans will benefit from these moves.

Still, many Uruguayans aren't exactly happy about either measure.

The activists who won the abortion battle last week applauded just briefly and then left the senate gallery complaining about the concessions they made.

"This is a solution very much 'a la Uruguaya,'" said Romina Napilote, a 27-year-old sociologist with the Pro-Derechos group who worries that the 10 pages of fine print added to win over a few reluctant lawmakers will end up forcing more women into risky clandestine abortions.

"We are very conciliating, always addressing what the conservatives want and trying for the middle ground," she said. "It's an issue in our political culture ... Living in a society with so much tolerance for the opinions of others also holds us back."

For filmmaker Pablo Stoll, whose movies have captured the essence of everyday life in Montevideo, "the Uruguayan way" satisfies no one.

"It means getting halfway there and not taking responsibility for the other 50 percent," he said while sipping coffee in La Florida, a corner bar full of stalwarts from the local communist party chapter.

"I grew up with the conviction that there would be utopias, and we haven't gotten there yet," he said, dismissing both the marijuana and abortion measures as likely to fail or be overturned. "At some point you have to take a stand ? you can't always be with one foot on each side of the line."

That feeling is reflected in Mujica's polling numbers. He enjoyed 66 percent popularity ratings when he was elected with 51 percent of the vote in 2009, but his numbers have plunged, to 43 percent last month. And when asked about his performance, Uruguayans are even more critical: only 36 percent approve, compared to 42 percent disapprove. The CIFRA tracking poll of 802 voters had an error margin of 3.4 percent.

But Mujica is very much a product of his society, one where a series of reforms in the early 1900s established Montevideo as a socially liberal bastion in a region where the Roman Catholic Church still has huge influence. The reforms separated Church and State, removed religion from public schools and legalized divorce long before other countries did.

They were so committed to the idea of the collective good that they banned colorful paint on the facades of buildings, all of which had to remain the same color as their original materials. This is why so many of Montevideo's concrete buildings remain grey even today, Caetano said.

"No one more than anyone else" was a common lecture to immigrants arriving in the port of Montevideo in those days, reflecting a disdain for people who tried to stand above or apart from the rest.

"Mujica loves this phrase ? he repeats it all the time," Caetano said. "It means the rich are less rich and the poor are less poor. It also means avoiding conflicts, trying to soften clashes with your opponents and looking to make deals instead."

He bought the sky-blue Beetle, his only declared asset, before becoming president in 2010, replacing a Vespa scooter that he and his wife, Sen. Lucia Topolansky, used to ride together to Congress from their farm in the working-class "Rincon del Cerro," or "corner of the hill" neighborhood in Montevideo's gritty outskirts.

"They say I'm the world's poorest president. Let me tell you that I'm not poor! Poor are those who need too much," he said Thursday while getting an honorary degree at Argentina's Universidad de La Plata, the day after the final abortion vote.

"I discovered the keys to this in the jail cells, when I couldn't read. If I hadn't spent those years there, I wouldn't be who I am, because one learns more from pain than from bounty," he said. "That's why, the night when I had a mattress, I felt happy. How is it possible, therefore, that we spend our lives poisoned with desperation to buy a new car every two years? If I could, I would live much more simply."

Obama, Romney exchange one-liners at New York charity event

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Locked in a tense race with time running out, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney took time off to exchange light-hearted jabs and make fun of each other on Thursday in a joint appearance at a high-profile charity dinner.

Two days after a brutal debate in which they exchanged verbal blows and stalked each other on stage, Obama and Romney greeted each other warmly, dressed formally in white tie and tails.

But the combativeness of the campaign trail was ever-present as the two foes gave back-to-back speeches at the 67th annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.

Romney, speaking first, said Obama, who wants to increase taxes on the wealthy to help fund government programs, must have had some thoughts as he looked out at the crowd of wealthy people at the dinner.

"You have to wonder what he's thinking: So little time, so much to redistribute," he said.

Obama, when it was his turn, made fun of Romney's vast wealth.

"Earlier I went shopping at some stores in Midtown. I understand Governor Romney went shopping for some stores in Midtown," he said.

The Al Smith dinner is a glittering affair at the Waldcrf-Astoria hotel where New York's high society dined on poached lobster and rack of lamb and contributed $5 million for various children's charities.

Obama and Romney, facing a third and final debate Monday in Florida, sat close to each other at the dinner, separated only by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York who spoke at both the Republican and Democratic conventions in late August and early September.

The event is an annual speaking opportunity for presidents or president aspirants to test their comic skills with self-deprecating jokes usually written up by clever speechwriters.

Obama made light of his much-panned performance at his first debate with Romney on October 3. He said at the second debate, where he was judged the winner, he had been well-rested because of the "nice long nap I had at the first debate."

BIDEN A TARGET OF BOTH

Romney also was self-deprecating, noting that the way he prepared for the debate was to "refrain from alcohol for 65 years." As a practicing Mormon, the former Massachusetts governor abstains from alcohol.

Obama, who frequently credits himself with ordering the mission that led to the death of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, noted that the last debate is about foreign policy.

"Spoiler alert: We got bin Laden!" he said.

Romney tweaked Obama on the high jobless rate, saying its recent small decline meant only one thing: "You're better off now than you were four weeks ago."

Obama said he and Romney have some things in common, like their unusual middle names. Romney's is Mitt. "I wish I could use my middle name," said Obama, whose middle name is Hussein.

If there was one thing they had in common, it was their ability to make fun of Vice President Joe Biden, Obama's gaffe-prone No. 2.

Obama said he sometimes hears that he is getting old and has lost a step and when he does, he says, "Settle down, Joe, I'm trying to run a Cabinet meeting."

Romney said when Biden speaks, it usually is to Romney's benefit, so much so that whenever his remarks are on TV it should be accompanied by a recorded message like those used in campaign ads: "I'm Mitt Romney, and I approve this message."

Obama got in a jab at the Republicans' use of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood at Romney's convention. Eastwood was panned for talking to an empty chair on stage as if Obama was sitting in it.

"Please take your seats," Obama told the crowd, "or else Clint Eastwood will yell at them."

The tone of the evening was set with introductory remarks by Al Smith IV, who could not resist teasing Romney for saying at the debate that he sorted through "binders full of women" in trying to put together a diverse cabinet as governor of Massachusetts.

"I want to say a special welcome to all of the accomplished women here tonight. It's good to see you made it out of those binders," Smith said to laughter.

The dinner started in 1945 in tribute to a former Democratic New York governor Smith, who lost the 1928 presidential election to Republican Herbert Hoover in a landslide.

Among the 1,600 guests were representatives from two of New York's major industries - media and Wall Street money. Spotted in the crowd were ABC television talk show host Katie Couric and Fox News executive Roger Ailes, as well as Steve Schwartzman, chief executive of private equity firm Blackstone Group, and Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan.

Cliff Childs - Lines and Colors

Cliff Childs
Cliff Childs is a concept artist and illustrator based in Los Angeles. He studied at the Otis College of Art and Design and is, I believe, currently working with Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Childs has an approach to concept environments that stresses atmosphere, both in the sense of atmospheric perspective and in terms of mood. Even in his renderings of daylight scenes, he plays with visual sensations of moisture laden air, giving his designs a palpable feeling of distance and temperature.

He also works his lighting in a theatrical manner, focusing attention with spotlighted effects, controlled passages of color and suggestions of texture.

In addition to his concept work, Childs has done illustrations for the Magic: The Gathering gaming card series.

I didn?t see any of the latter on his blog, but you will find a lot of his concept and personal work, including sketches from life in traditional media.

Childs?s work is on display as one of the artists represented in the Painting in Pixels: An Exhibition of Concept Art currently at the Riverside Art Museum (see my recent post).

Plant-based foods may offer reduced risk for aggressive prostate cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? President George W. Bush made no secret that he detested broccoli. With all due respect to our former leader, researchers have found one more great reason to add fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea to your diet.

A study by Susan Steck of the Arnold School of Public Health finds that a high intake of flavonoids, a group of compounds found in plants, may lower the risk for highly aggressive prostate cancer.

"Incorporating more plant-based foods and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea, into the diet may offer some protection against aggressive prostate cancer," said Steck, an associate professor at the Arnold School and an affiliated scholar with the Center for Research in Health Disparities.

"Filling your plate with flavonoid-rich foods is one behavior that can be changed to have a beneficial impact on health," she said.

Steck presented her findings at the International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research. The annual event is sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research, whose mission is to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication and collaboration.

Prior preclinical studies have shown that flavonoids have beneficial effects against prostate cancer, but few studies have examined the effect of flavonoids on prostate cancer in humans.

Steck and her colleagues used data from 920 African-American men and 977 white men in the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project who were newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Participants completed a self-reported dietary history questionnaire to assess flavonoid intake, which was measured using the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2011 Database for the Flavonoid Content of Selected Foods.

Men with the highest total intake of flavonoids had a 25 percent lower risk for aggressive prostate cancer compared with those men with the lowest flavonoid intake.

"We found that higher total flavonoid intake was associated with reduced odds for aggressive prostate cancer in both African-American and European-American men, but no individual subclass of flavonoids appeared to be protective independently, suggesting that it is important to consume a variety of plant-based foods in the diet, rather than to focus on one specific type of flavonoid or flavonoid-rich food," Steck said.

In addition, the risk for aggressive prostate cancer was even lower in those men younger than 65 and in current smokers with the highest levels of flavonoid intake. Dietary questionnaire results revealed that citrus fruits and juices, such as oranges and grapefruits, tea, grapes, strawberries, onions and cooked greens were the top contributors to total flavonoid intake among the participants. "The results support public health recommendations and guidelines from organizations such as the American Institute for Cancer Research to consume a more plant-based diet," Steck said. "In particular, consuming more flavonoid-rich foods may be beneficial for those people who are at increased risk for cancer, such as smokers."

Protests as Ireland's 1st abortion clinic opens

Protesters opposed to abortion hold placards outside the Marie Stopes clinic in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Thursday, 18, 2012. The first abortion clinic on the island of Ireland has opened in Belfast, sparking protests by Christian conservatives from both the Catholic and Protestant sides of Northern Ireland?s divide. BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? The first abortion clinic on the island of Ireland opened Thursday in Belfast, sparking protests by conservatives from both the Catholic and Protestant sides of Northern Ireland.

The Marie Stopes family planning center will offer the abortion pill to women who are less than nine weeks pregnant ? but only if doctors determine they're at risk of death or long-term health damage from their pregnancy.

That's the law in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, where abortion is otherwise illegal.

But more than 200 protesters opposed to abortion under any circumstances gathered outside the central Belfast clinic hours ahead of its opening Thursday, waving placards reading "Keep Ireland abortion free."

And Northern Ireland Attorney General John Larkin wrote to lawmakers, who broadly oppose abortion, offering his help if they investigate the clinic's operations. Larkin said he could order the clinic to be closed only if evidence emerged of "serious criminal conduct" there.

Protesters demanded that the clinic be shut down regardless, lest it become a beachhead for expanding abortion rights in Northern Ireland, the only corner of the United Kingdom that has not legalized abortion on demand.

"We're in 2012. Women's health is not in danger. Women are not dying because they cannot get abortions," said Bernadette Smyth, the Protestant leader of a Belfast anti-abortion group called Precious Life.

"For Marie Stopes, this is only a first step," said Liam Gibson from the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, a predominantly Catholic pressure group.

He called on Belfast police to arrest the clinic's doctors and directors if they give women information about abortion services in neighboring Britain, where abortions have been legal since 1967. About 4,000 women from the Republic of Ireland and 1,000 from Northern Ireland travel there annually for abortions.

Officials from Marie Stopes, a British charity that already operates such clinics in more than 40 countries, said they expect to provide relatively few abortions in Northern Ireland, given the heavy legal restrictions.

But they said Belfast, and all of Ireland, needed a non-judgmental, non-threatening place where women in crisis pregnancies could go for guidance. They said their office was already receiving calls from women in the Republic of Ireland, where it's illegal to receive shipments of the abortion pill through the mail.

"Mostly what we'll be doing is offering advice. Many of the people we see we won't be able to treat, because of the legal framework," said Tracey McNeill, vice president of Marie Stopes.

McNeill said she had no problem with the protesters so long as they didn't threaten or intimidate clients. "It's important that people express their views in a democracy," she said.

Police erected crowd-control barriers outside the clinic on Great Victoria Street, one of Belfast's broadest boulevards, to prevent protesters from blocking the clinic's entrance and sidewalk. Clinic directors had tried to keep its location secret but that information was leaked last week.

The Roman Catholic Church, the largest church in both parts of Ireland, this week launched a monthlong campaign to press the Irish government to strengthen its constitutional ban on abortion. It has denounced the Belfast clinic's opening but shied away from calling for protests.

"We are in the middle of a struggle for the soul of Northern Ireland," said Bishop Donal McKeown, the senior Catholic in Belfast, who didn't attend the protest. He said Marie Stopes directors were seeking "to promote the acceptability of abortion."

Elsewhere in Northern Ireland, a group of teenagers at a Catholic high school announced they would hold daily lunchtime prayers for the clinic to be closed.

Sheila Fullerton, a teacher at St. Mary's Grammar School in the town of Magherafelt, said about 40 boys and girls aged 16 and 17 approached her asking to mount the protest. "They feel strongly this is something they must do," she said.

Irish abortion rights groups welcomed the clinic's opening but said they wouldn't mount counter demonstrations because that would only encourage potential violence and the intimidation of pregnant women outside the clinic.

The Northern Ireland Health Department says 30 to 50 women per year do receive abortions in local hospitals after doctors deem their pregnancies pose a sufficient risk to their health. It declined to elaborate.

Goretti Horgan, leader of a Belfast-based group called Alliance for Choice, said while the clinic wouldn't technically offer any increased access to abortion, it would encourage women to seek the abortion pill who previously had to seek state-funded services through their local doctor.

Horgan said general-practice doctors might be opposed to abortion themselves or fearful of being targeted by protesters or lawsuits. She said this meant women with life-threatening conditions still found themselves flying to Britain as a less difficult option.

"The main need for the clinic is for the women who are ill or very distressed and have a right to a legal abortion here. For those women, I think it's awful that they put those women on a plane, with their medical notes under their arms. It's scandalous," she said.

Like almost all Northern Ireland politicians, Health Minister Edwin Poots says he doesn't want the clinic in Belfast but it can operate as long as it observes all existing laws.

"If they break the law, they will be prosecuted," he told lawmakers.

The clinic also offers information on women's reproductive health topics such as contraceptives or sexually transmitted diseases.

The clinic's legal inability to offer any abortion option to women more than nine weeks pregnant means that those women seeking abortions because their fetus has been diagnosed with fatal abnormalities still must travel to Britain.

Ruth Bowie, spokeswoman for an Irish group called Terminations for Medical Reasons, said doctors can detect such problems only once the fetus is at least 12 weeks old.

Bowie said Northern Ireland's abortion laws mean the clinic "will be of no help to the women north and south who are facing the trauma and upset of fatal fetal abnormalities. Women and men in this situation continue to be forced to travel away from family, friends and their homes at the worst time of their lives."
