How to Address the Hair Loss Problem for Men ? SpinPad

Many men start experiencing hair loss in middle age, and for some it starts even earlier. This can have several different causes, some of them genetic and some due to diet or lifestyle. There are, however, some effective solutions for men?s hair loss that can help you deal with this problem. In this article we?ll be exploring some of the best of these options.

Numerous chemicals on the head could be reinforcing loss of hair. Although a woman often buys expensive hair paraphernalia, men don?t even know half the time what they place on their heads each day. Provided you employ things such as shampoos, gels or cream rinses that are made with strong chemicals or toxins to take the gray out of your hair, items such as these could hurt your hair. The person who styles your hair might be employing this type of thing also. Making use of nothing other than a mild conditioner and cleanser is one thought process. If your hair is reacting badly to a certain chemical, switching to something more natural could help stop your hair loss.

For the men who are experiencing hair loss that isn?t easy to cure, there are numerous options. The ones like laser therapy and hair transplants, can cost a lot of money. Instead of doing this you might want to simply search for a new hairstyle that?ll work nicely with your thinning hair. You can get ways of looking better with a good hair stylist. Very often, people, men in particular, tend to stick with a particular hair style even when it no longer serves them. Sometimes changing your hair color, as to a slightly lighter color, can make bald spots less noticeable.

You could deal with this by ridding yourself of your hair and just accepting it. There are some males that would feel this was saying they were defeated, however a lot of males literally prefer the look of baldness, still without having hair loss hang-ups . This is not something that appeals to everyone, but it?s worth considering. This could be a straightforward and low-priced way to be worry-free of your hair. There are certain men who would find this look is better on them than some other men, and it might be a good idea to question other people about it, or even the one who cuts your hair. This doesn?t mean it has to be a permanent fix provided you don?t love the look, you could always grow the hair back in.

Always talk to your doctor before you stop taking medication that has been prescribed for you. Hair loss due to medication isn?t overly common other than chemotherapy, however if you?re experiencing hair loss shortly after starting a new medication it?s a good idea to talk to your doctor about your options. The reason that hair loss treatments do not achieve the same result for all men, is because men?s hair loss has numerous causes. Nutritional vitamins most likely will not benefit someone who is balding in their twenties, as an example, due to the fact they probably have it in their DNA. In a case like this, getting a hair transplant could be the only answer available. And yet for others, a less extreme action may encourage fresh hair development.

Pope visits Mexico pledging to fight drugs "evil"

LEON, Mexico - Pope Benedict arrived in Mexico on Friday promising to "unmask the evil" of drug trafficking in a country ravaged by gang violence that has killed 50,000 people in the past five years.

The pope began his three-day visit to the world's second-most populous Catholic state in the central city of Leon, where he received one of the most exuberant welcomes of any of his foreign trips.

Tens of thousands of people, 20 deep in some places, lined the streets on his 22-mile (35-km) drive through the city.

He touched down in Mexico after making strong statements aboard his papal plane about the country's spiraling drug war.

"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters, referring to the violent conflict between rival drug cartels and the state that has killed 50,000 people since 2007.

"It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs," the pope added.

Raising his arms aloft as he exited the plane, Benedict descended the stairs slowly, holding the handrail. He was greeted by President Felipe Calderon and a group of children while crowds cheered and waved Vatican flags.

Addressing the masses gathered at the airport in a steady, measured tone, the pope, speaking in Spanish, said he had come as a "pilgrim of faith, of hope, and of love."

"I will pray especially for those in need, particularly those who suffer because of old and new rivalries, resentments and all forms of violence," said Benedict, adding that he hoped his message would also reach Mexicans outside of their homeland.

The bloodshed across Mexico was in the mind of many waiting to see Benedict in the city, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars.

Throngs of Catholics dressed in white t-shirts and caps threw yellow and white confetti, having waited since early morning to see the pope pass. Many of them were young people let out of school for the day.

Several stood in front of a large banner that read "Pope, pray that the violence ends, pray that peace returns." "Violence is the country's biggest priority. There are some places where you can't even set foot outside it's so dangerous," said 16-year-old Martin Zamora who hung the sign with his Catholic youth group.

"Many young people have decided to join up with organized crime instead of fighting it. That's what the pope is coming here for, to help save young people."

Benedict, who turns 85 next month, will rest for 24 hours to recover from jet lag. His main message will be delivered on Sunday at a massive outdoor service that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend.

The pope's strong words on the drug menace should offer comfort to Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating down the cartels. The government's inability to stem the violence has eroded support for his conservative National Action Party (PAN), which has strong Catholic roots and faces an uphill struggle to retain the presidency in elections in July.

Calderon hailed Benedict's arrival, saying it was of great significance at a time of "many hardships" for Mexico.

"Mexico has suffered, as your Holiness knows well, the ruthless and cruel violence of organized crime," Calderon said in his welcome speech, which was followed by a performance of traditional folk dancers and mariachi musicians.

A survey by polling firm GCE published in the Milenio newspaper on Friday showed 72 percent of respondents wanted the pope to speak out on the security situation in Mexico.

ABUSE SCANDALS

Benedict, who also travels to Cuba next week, hopes to rally the faithful in Mexico, where more and more people are being lured to evangelical Protestant churches.

The German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds when he criss-crossed the region during his 27-year papacy.

Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshippers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read "We are not Roman Catholics.

The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world - including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.

Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.

During the pope's visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel's molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.

"The enthusiasm (about the pope's visit) felt in Leon, is not the same in the rest of the country. The abuses by Father Maciel have cast a shadow," Barranco said in an interview.

Benedict has apologized for priest abuse in the past but has no plans to meet Mexican victims. 1

"There is so much suffering in Mexico that to narrowly focus on just one issue would be extreme," said Father Jorge Martinez, an official from Mexico's Episcopal Conference, when asked if the pope would address questions about Maciel's legacy.

The pope heads to Cuba on Monday in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy. Communism, he said on Friday, no longer works in Cuba.

Market bounces back from 3-day losing streak

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose in light volume on Friday, buoyed by rising energy and basic materials shares, as the S&P 500 kept showing resilience even as it posted its second negative week so far this year.

The benchmark S&P 500 slipped 0.5 percent for the week. In an indication of the rally's strength and consistency, that was the S&P's worst performance since the last week of December. In its only other down week in 2012, the index dipped 0.17 percent.

The market edged lower in early trading, but downward momentum faded despite widespread expectations for a correction after a rally that set the S&P 500 up for its best back-to-back quarters since 2009.

The S&P 500 is still near its highest since May 2008.

"There's many people thinking a correction is coming, but some technical indicators suggest more a pause than a correction at this point," said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati.

The S&P 500 found strong support at its 14-day moving average, near 1,386, from where it bounced back to post gains for the day. Holding that level "speaks to the power of the uptrend, it proves the momentum is still in place," Salamone said.

The S&P energy sector index <.GSPE> and the S&P basic materials sector index <.GSPM>, both up almost 1 percent, led gains after both sectors weighed the most during Thursday's decline.

Analysts see sector rotation as an indication of investors' reluctance to abandon stocks and a sign of potential strength for the market.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 34.59 points, or 0.27 percent, to 13,080.73 at the close. The S&P 500 Index <.INX> rose 4.33 points, or 0.31 percent, to 1,397.11. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> added 4.60 points, or 0.15 percent, to 3,067.92.

For the week, the Dow fell 1.2 percent and the S&P 500 lost 0.5 percent, while the Nasdaq added 0.4 percent. It was the Nasdaq's sixth-straight week of gains, following a dip of 0.06 percent early last month.

About 5.9 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, the second-lowest volume for any day this year. The daily volume average so far in 2012 is 6.84 billion.

U.S. crude oil futures prices rose 1.4 percent to settle at $106.87 a barrel on estimates that Iranian oil exports fell significantly this month.

Chevron Corp rose 1 percent to $106.36.

A catalyst for Friday's rebound in basic resources stocks came from the world's top copper producer, Chile's Codelco, which reported a surge in profits and an increase in production.

Copper prices rose 1 percent.

New U.S. single-family home sales fell 1.6 percent in February while prices jumped to their highest level in eight months, according to a government report on Friday that was the latest to paint a mixed picture of the housing market.

The PHLX housing sector index <.HGX> lost 0.6 percent after falling nearly 3 percent earlier in the session.

KB Home tumbled 8.5 percent to $10.29 after the fifth-largest U.S. homebuilder posted a wider first-quarter loss and said orders for new homes declined.

A series of blunders hit the market debut of BATS Global Markets Exchange , causing its own shares to erroneously trade for less than a penny. The company said it would withdraw its IPO.

The problems also fouled a trade in shares of Apple Inc , and caused a temporary halt in its shares. The erroneous Apple trade was later canceled.

In Nasdaq trading, Apple lost 0.5 percent to $596.05.

Online games maker Zynga Inc fell 2.6 percent to $13.40 after it said shareholders will sell about 43 million shares in a secondary offering.

Job search website Monster Worldwide Inc is open to selling all or part of itself and expects to have data ready for potential buyers soon, its chief executive said in an interview. Monster's stock jumped 7.7 percent to $10.22.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a ratio of about 12 to 5, while on the Nasdaq, about two issues rose for every one that fell.

Imagine Plans New Version of Orwell's 1984

George Orwell?s seminal literary work 1984 could be getting a new movie adaptation.

Imagine Entertainment, the production house run by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, and LBI Entertainment, the banner run by Julie Yorn, are teaming up to develop a new take on the 20th century classic.

The book is set in a dystopian society in a perpetual state of war, which in turn leads to a state of paranoia. Propaganda, surveillance, mind control and cult of personality -- concepts seen in totalitarian and fascist states such as Nazi Germany and Stalin?s Soviet Union -- were taken to new levels in the book written in 1948 and published in 1949.

The story centers on Winston Smith, who works for a government branch called the Ministry of Truth, where he alters facts and histories but secretly harbors desires of rebellion (as well as desires of a forbidden love affair). The ideas in the novel became hugely influential in the worlds of politics and art, with the author?s name eventually becoming an adjective (Orwellian).

Shepard Fairey, the street artist perhaps best known for creating the Barack Obama "Hope" poster, was instrumental in bringing the project to Imagine and LBI and might take some sort of producer role once the deals shake out.

Imagine and Fairey were pursuing Orwell's estate for the rights to 1984 and discovered that Yorn was simultaneously seeking the rights. The companies then decided to pair up. ?

The producers are out to writers to find a take on the material before setting it up at a studio.

The book has been adapted several times in TV and movies, the most recent being, natch, in 1984 in a version directed by Michael Radford and starring John Hurt, Richard Burton and Suzanna Hamilton.

Adaptu Wallet for iPhone

Adaptu Wallet for the iPhone, a free and ad-free?app, is the closest thing to a mobile wallet I've ever tried. Not only does the app display your latest account balances in real-time and send you bill reminders, like the Editors' Choice-winning iPhone app for Mint.com or the popular Pageonce?(Free, 4 stars)?app, Adaptu Wallet also tracks loyalty programs, forecasts your spending, and lets you photograph and store images of all the loose ends in your wallet, like your insurance, Social Security, and business cards. All of this sits under bank-level security.

?

But while rich in features, Adaptu Wallet isn't as navigable or user-friendly as Pageonce or Mint.com's iPhone apps. More on that below.

?

Getting Started
Adaptu offers a couple ways to get started. You can either sign up at Adaptu.com first, fill out your profile, and then launch the app, or you can download the app first and create an account through your mobile device. I prefer signing up at the website since it's easier to fill out all those questions about your financial profile. Once you can start the app, you're asked to set up a 4-digit numeric PIN.

?

After that, it's time to set up your accounts. Adaptu has established relationships with major U.S. players in the following categories: banking, cell phone carriers (for billing alerts), credit cards, investments, loans, mortgages, and rewards programs. My yuppie lifestyle easily integrated into this app: I found it a snap to link to my Citibank, Verizon, Netflix, Delta Skymiles, Starbucks Rewards, and PayPal accounts. Pageonce offers many more service providers, like Time Warner Cable, Comcast, and conEdison.

The app takes a few minutes to connect to these vendors and automatically imports all your data, from balances to bill deadlines to credit limits. It displays this cleanly on the startup screen. Like with other apps, it automatically categorizes your transactions and lets you manually input cash payments. Now, it's on to making sense out of this information.

Suze Orman in your wallet
Adaptu's marketing folks liken their app to having Suze Orman, the screaming host of Can You Afford It? in your pocket, and I couldn't have put it better. The app takes stock of all your past spending behavior and income to create present and future forecasts of your monthly income and monthly expenditure, with the aim of helping you make smarter purchasing decisions at the point of purchase. On the home screen under My Wallet, tap See Cash Flow to view your monthly cash flow; tilt the app horizontally for a three-month flow. You can set your total monthly budget within the app using a rather clunky slider, although I'd prefer to manage this from the Web application.

The cash flow charts are determined by looking at your previous month's income and spending habits (labeled as need-based or want-based) and predicting this month's income and expenditures. Ultimately, you're supposed to refer to these charts anytime you want to buy a big ticket item, to determine whether you can afford to do it now or if you should wait.

These charts are useful if you take the time to classify your transactions as need-based or want-based and your monthly income is consistent enough to create an accurate forecast. I really liked visualizing my balance and income in coming months. However the OCD side of me recognized that in order to create an accurate cash flow chart, I'd have to go through all my transactions and classify them accurately. Fortunately, Adaptu lets you do this within the app.

In fact my biggest gripe about Adaptu's app is the Web application itself, which you'll use frequently to manage features with the mobile app. It's chock full of valuable information, budgeting software, and financial planning advice, but none of this is clearly organized. For instance when I was first starting out I wanted someone to guide me through the setup process. So I clicked Getting Started, and was brought to what looks like a discussion board with topics like "how to set pay day for budget?" and "Biweekly income budgeting vs. Monthly." Not helpful. The same thing happened when I clicked on sub categories within the toolbar?I was redirected to a discussion board.

Security
The Adaptu Wallet iPhone app is more secure than my physical wallet. Like most finance and banking apps, Adaptu doesn't store data in the device itself to prevent outsiders from recovering the data in case your phone is lost or stolen.

Adaptu says its app uses "bank-level security," which means information is encrypted with AES 256-bit and verified by TRUSTe, VeriSign and MacAfee. The app also forces users to enter a PIN at every login and any time the app goes on standby mode after a minute. It's annoying, but reassuring.

Should You Adapt to Adaptu?
Adaptu Wallet for the iPhone is an ambitious little app that packs many unique features, like spending forecasts, keeping track of loyalty programs, and storing photos of all the minutiae you stuff in your wallet. All this app needs is a card processor and I'm ditching my physical wallet for good. It's not as user-friendly as Mint.com for iPhone, our Editors' Choice in the financial management category, but it's a very promising start for the year-old startup.?

New evidence of harmfulness of second-hand smoke: Cancer causing agent present in gaseous phase of cigarette smoke

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? A team of researchers led by A. K. Rajasekaran, PhD, Director of the Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research, has shown that a key protein involved in cell function and regulation is stopped by a substance present in cigarette smoke. Their work is published online in the American Journal of Physiology -- Lung Cell and Molecular Physiology.

Cigarette smoke is well recognized as a cause of lung cancer and is associated with many other forms of cancer in adults. Cigarette smoke has more than 4,000 components, many of which are linked to the development and progression of lung cancer. Evidence has shown secondhand smoke to be as dangerous as primary smoke due to its impact on the cells of the body.

In the study, the authors found a cancer-causing agent called reactive oxygen species (ROS) present in the gaseous phase of cigarette smoke that has the ability to inhibit normal cell function. Exposure to the secondhand smoke produced by as little as two cigarettes was found to almost completely stop the function of a cell's sodium pump within a few hours.

In normal cells, the sodium pump plays a critical role transporting potassium into the cell and sodium out of the cell. The competence of the cell's sodium pump, i.e., its inability to regulate sodium, is predictive of cell damage, disease progression and ultimately, survival.

"This is critical information with regard to secondhand smoke," said Dr. Rajasekaran. "We now know that one need not inhale the particulate matter present in secondhand smoke to suffer the consequence of smoking. Exposure to the gaseous substance alone, which you breathe while standing near a smoker, is sufficient to cause harm."

Dr. Lee Goodglick, Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UCLA, and co-senior author of the study, noted, "Few reliable lung cancer biomarkers that could predict survival, treatment options or response to therapy exist today. Even fewer have been recognized where the function of the biomarker is known, yielding important information about the mechanism of action. This study really accomplishes both."

This research is the latest finding in the compendium of evidence that supports protecting children from exposure to cigarette smoke. Excessive exposure to cigarette smoke during childhood can facilitate lung cancer development as children grow into adults.

While more research is needed to understand the consequences of sodium pump inhibition by cigarette smoke, this study reveals that secondhand smoke may be even more dangerous than previously thought.

Oracle bounces back in 3Q on new software sales

(AP) ? Sales of new software licenses at Oracle accelerated in the latest quarter, easing concerns about customers defecting to less expensive alternatives on the Internet.

The improvement announced Tuesday follows through on the business software maker's promise to rebound from a disappointing performance at the end of last year. Oracle said it expanded its sales staff and did a better job of closing deals.

"All we really needed to do was focus on execution, and that we did," Safra Catz, Oracle's president and chief financial officer, told analysts in a conference call.

The growth is also a reflection of an improving economy. Oracle's fiscal third quarter covers December through February, which coincided with the biggest three-month hiring spurt in the U.S. during the past two years. The trend could signal that companies aren't as worried about the threat of another recession, encouraging them to increase spending in other areas such as new software.

The positive vibes from the latest quarter subsided slightly after Oracle provided a forecast that raised the possibility of a revenue decline in the current quarter, which ends in May, compared with a year ago. The current three-month stretch is typically Oracle's busiest period.

Oracle Corp. earned $2.5 billion, or 49 cents per share, during the most recent quarter, an 18 percent increase from net income of $2.1 billion, or 41 cents per share, at the same time last year.

If not for acquisition expenses and other costs, Oracle said it would have earned 62 cents per share. That figure soundly exceeded the average estimate of 56 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Oracle thrived, despite meager growth in its total revenue, which grew just 3 percent from last year to $9 billion. The total mirrored analyst forecasts.

The key to the quarter was a 7 percent increase in revenue from new software licenses. Investors focus on this category because the new licenses unleash a steady stream of future revenue from maintenance and software upgrades. The new business also helps offset defections to Oracle rivals that specialize in Internet-based software known as cloud computing.

Although they still much smaller, cloud-computing specialists such as Salesforce.com Inc. and Workday Inc. have been luring away Oracle customers by selling applications over the Internet as a subscription service. That approach is a departure from the industry's long-established practice of licensing and installing applications on employees' individual machines.

After once dismissing cloud computing as a kooky concept, Oracle is expanding into the field as part of its effort to create a one-stop technology shop for big companies and government agencies. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison boasted to analysts Tuesday that his company is in a far better position to succeed in cloud computing than its longtime foil, SAP. Both Oracle and SAP have been spending billions to buy smaller companies that specialize in cloud-computing services.

The recent quarter's increase in new software licenses indicated that Oracle bounced back from the problems that turned its previous quarter into a huge letdown. Oracle's year-over-year sales of new software increased by just 2 percent in its fiscal second quarter, well below management and investor expectations. After those numbers were released, Oracle's plummeted nearly 12 percent, its biggest one-day drop in nine years.

Oracle also has been trying to expand into computer hardware with its $7.3 billion purchase of Sun Microsystems Inc. in 2010. That hasn't worked out so well.

In the latest quarter, Oracle's revenue from hardware fell 11 percent from the same time last year. The company predicted another decline in the current quarter, but Ellison assured analysts Tuesday that hardware revenue will begin to climb in the company's next fiscal year, which begins in June.

Software still accounts for about 70 percent of Oracle's revenue.

Oracle's stock increased 39 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $30.49 in extended trading. The stock had risen to as much as $31.54, or nearly 5 percent, until Oracle released its projections for the current quarter during its conference call.

The forecast calls for revenue from new software licenses to decline up to 2 percent or grow up to 8 percent, weighed down partly by changes in currency-exchange rates. Oracle said total revenue for the quarter could decline as much as 2 percent or grow as much as 2 percent ? well below the 4 percent increase expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

The company expects its adjusted earnings for the quarter to range from 76 cents to 81 cents per share. Analysts had expected 76 cents.

Cincinnati beats Florida St. 62-56 to advance

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? The Cincinnati Bearcats are making it an Ohio party in the NCAA tournament, giving the Buckeye State four teams in the final 16.

Dion Dixon stole the ball and dunked to put Cincinnati ahead for good with 1:32 left, and the Bearcats edged out Florida State 62-56 Sunday night to reach their first regional semifinal in the NCAA tournament since 2001.

Cincinnati (26-10) will play No. 2 seed Ohio State in Boston on Thursday night in the East, joining Xavier and Ohio in the second weekend.

Sean Kilpatrick scored 18 points, Dixon finished with 15 for Cincinnati. Yancy Gates finished with 10, and JaQuon Parker grabbed 11 rebounds.

Florida State (25-10) snapped a six-game winning streak that took the Seminoles to their first Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title. But the 'Noles are heading home short of the regional semifinal they reached a year ago.

Luke Loucks led the Seminoles with 14, Bernard James had 11 and Michael Snaer 11.

This game featured 19 lead changes and 11 ties, and neither team led by more than three in the second half until the Bearcats scored seven straight points. Kilpatrick hit a free throw tying it up at 50, then Dixon stole the ball from Loucks in front of the Cincinnati bench as Florida State tried to bring the ball up against the Bearcats' press. Dixon took off and slammed down the lead.

Cashmere Wright hit a jumper, and Gates added two free throws for 56-50 lead with 35.3 seconds left. The Bearcats sealed it by hitting all eight free throws in the final 35.3 seconds.

The Seminoles led 29-28 at halftime and were up by five in the first half. But a Florida State team that came into the NCAA tournament sixth in Division I holding opponents to 38.1 percent shooting couldn't stop Cincinnati in the second half. The Bearcats hit 11 of 21 (52.4 percent) overall and 12 of 13 at the free throw line. Cincinnati had a big edge at the line (19 of 23) overall compared to Florida State (12 of 15).

Florida State had trouble holding onto the ball, too, with 13 of its 17 turnovers coming on steals by Cincinnati. The Bearcats turned those into 19 points.

Cincinnati said before the game that Florida State would fit right in the Big East with its stingy defense, and this game looked just like a conference battle.

Florida State last led 50-49 on a pair of free throws by Loucks with 2:09 left on Gates' fourth personal of the game. That's when the Bearcats took over.

The first half gave a glimpse of what the final 20 minutes would be.

Snaer hit back-to-back 3s within the first three minutes after the Seminoles' leading scorer was shut out in their opening win over St. Bonaventure. Snaer missed on a couple of air balls, but he still had nine points by halftime.

But Snaer missed a 3 with 12 seconds left, and Ian Miller missed a 3, too. Okaro White also missed beyond the arc ? all three misses coming in the final 37 seconds.

Florida State led 26-25 at halftime largely thanks to a quick six points keyed by senior Deividas Dulkys. The guard from Lithuania hit a 3-pointer, then had a pair of steals. White, who hit a free throw in the mini-spurt, failed to score off Dulkys' first steal. So Dulkys stole the ball from Cincinnati freshman Jermaine Sanders and went down for the dunk and a 23-18 lead with 5:20 left that matched the Seminoles' largest lead of the game.

But Kilpatrick answered with a 3-pointer with the Bearcats hitting four free throws down the stretch to pull Florida State back in.

Study shows it takes 10 units of alternative electricity sources to offset a unit of fossil fuel-generated power

EUGENE, Ore. -- Technology alone won't help the world turn away from fossil fuel-based energy sources, says University of Oregon sociologist Richard York. In a newly published paper, York argues for a shift in political and economic policies to embrace the concept that continued growth in energy consumption is not sustainable.

Many nations, including the United States, are actively pursuing technological advances to reduce the use of fossil fuels to potentially mitigate human contributions to climate-change. The approach of the International Panel on Climate Change assumes alternative energy sources -- nuclear, wind and hydro -- will equally displace fossil fuel consumption. This approach, York argues, ignores "the complexity of human behavior."

Based on a four-model study of electricity used in some 130 countries in the past 50 years, York found that it took more that 10 units of electricity produced from non-fossil sources -- nuclear, hydropower, geothermal, wind, biomass and solar -- to displace a single unit of fossil fuel-generated electricity.

"When you see growth in nuclear power, for example, it doesn't seem to affect the rate of growth of fossil fuel-generated power very much," said York, a professor in the sociology department and environmental studies program. He also presented two models on total energy use. "When we looked at total energy consumption, we found a little more displacement, but still, at best, it took four to five units of non-fossil fuel energy to displace one unit produced with fossil fuel."

For the paper -- published online March 18 by the journal Nature Climate Change -- York analyzed data from the World Bank's world development indicators gathered from around the world. To control for a variety of variables of economics, demographics and energy sources, data were sorted and fed into the six statistical models.

Admittedly, York said, energy-producing technologies based on solar, wind and waves are relatively new and may yet provide viable alternative sources as they are developed.

"I'm not saying that, in principle, we can't have displacement with these new technologies, but it is interesting that so far it has not happened," York said. "One reason the results seem surprising is that we, as societies, tend to see demand as an exogenous thing that generates supply, but supply also generates demand. Generating electricity creates the potential to use that energy, so creating new energy technologies often leads to yet more energy consumption."

Related to this issue, he said, was the development of high-efficiency automobile engines and energy-efficient homes. These improvements reduced energy consumption in some respects but also allowed for the production of larger vehicles and bigger homes. The net result was that total energy consumption often did not decrease dramatically with the rising efficiency of technologies.

"In terms of governmental policies, we need to be thinking about social context, not just the technology," York said. "We need to be asking what political and economic factors are conducive to seeing real displacement. Just developing non-fossil fuel sources doesn't in itself tend to reduce fossil fuel use a lot -- not enough. We need to be thinking about suppressing fossil fuel use rather than just coming up with alternatives alone."

The findings need to become part of the national discussion, says Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the UO. "Research from the social sciences is often lost in the big picture of federal and state policymaking," she said. "If we are to truly solve the challenges our environment is facing in the future, we need to consider our own behaviors and attitudes."

The advantage of a twitter account is that there is no restriction on who can participate or what country you reside in.

Websites such as LinkedIn offer the world?s largest professional network system: More than 200 countries with 100 million members are virtually connected. Using such a site automatically connects you to a large network that helps you promote your business/product.

There are many pro?s to being part of a social media network such as LinkedIn. Some of these positive reasons to join stem from the fact that the information and content you can receive from such sites are extremely rich. In just a short few seconds you are able to access details about a company and even about an individual?s background. You are also able to search other information about the company or the individual without spending a dime. You can also link up with other individuals and businesses not in your state or country. This international site provides many possible relationships with people all around the world.

Online media offers free and efficient ways to promote current business activities. Take advantage of this! In just a few short seconds you can communicate with thousands of people, informing them of new products, as well as current deals, discounts, and promotions.

Online marketing allows your business to interact with customers, build relationships, and grow together. Remember, without customers, there is no business..?
