Permanent TSB makes ?64m loss on disposal of loan portfolios ...

The regular audience on here will be aware of the prediction that Permanent TSB, the 99.5% state-owned bank, will run out of cash by April 2013 when it needs redeem significant bonds UNLESS the bank can dispose of assets beforehand or it gets an additional bailout. Yesterday, PTSB issued a statement to the stock exchange confirming that it has sold ?351m of loans (net of provisions and write-offs at February 2012) for a total of ?287m. This means that PTSB will need book a further loss in its books of ?64m, and may arouse suspicion that the price is a fire sale price forced on PTSB by its imminent obligations to redeem significant bonds in January and April 2013.

The buyers of the loans are identified in the PTSB release?as a SPV called ?Consumer Auto Receivables Finance Limited? and a ?global bank?. It is understood that Deutsche Bank is behind both, and industry insiders have raised eyebrows at the involvement of Deutsche Bank is these loans, the majority of which are understood to be car finance loans, because car finance is not an area in which Deutsche Bank specializes.

In addition, there has been a management buy-out of a PTSB unit, Permanent TSB Finance Limited. The management set up a new company called ?First Citizen Finance Limited? and all staff in the PTSB unit are expected to transfer to the new company. The new company is contracted by the buyer of the loans to service the loans. ?Management buy-out? ?might be a grandiose term for this transaction as PTSB has said the sale was for ?a nominal consideration?.The unit which was bought out by management made a ?16m loss in 2011, according to the statement, but it is unclear if that includes loan impairments and the operating profit of the businesses was not disclosed.

So, did a bank into which we have to date shoveled ?4bn and which we own 99.5% execute a financially stupid transaction? Was the sale price for the loans of ?287m a ?fire sale price? forced on the company by the need to repay bonds in January and April 2013. And was selling a unit to management for ?a nominal sum? a good deal for PTSB? Davy Corporate Finance again advised PTSB and how much did they get paid on the transaction? How were the portfolios marketed so as to maximize value? Can we expect Deutsche Bank, which doesn?t specialize in car finance, to flip the assets and make a quick windfall profit?

Given that Minister Noonan keeps on telling us the details of these transactions in banks which we practically own are commercially sensitive, who knows, who can tell.

Xbox TV: New rumours detail AAA game-less Xbox 360 - Pocket-lint

Microsoft is rumoured to be working on an Xbox set-top box that would offer casual gaming and all the entertainment functions of the current console, but without the capability of playing traditional AAA games like Halo 4 or Assassin's Creed III.

According to "multiple sources" talking to gadget site The Verge, the console - which Pocket-lint suggested Microsoft should make and sell back in June - would be a smaller, low-cost alternative to its Xbox console and allow the company to expand on its home entertainment offering to non-core gamers.

"We're told that the set-top box is part of a two-SKU strategy for Microsoft's next-generation of Xbox hardware that will be unveiled in 2013, with a release date ahead of the holiday shopping season," claims the site.

According to the site and its sources, the?Xbox 360 TV?will?"run on the core components of Windows 8 and support casual gaming titles rather than full Xbox games typically found on a dedicated console".

Seemingly, hardware specs aren't fully locked down.

On the rumours, Microsoft has issued the following statement: "Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention."?

The rumours tie in with a lengthy blog post the firm published in June?ahead of the annual E3 gaming conference in LA.

In it, Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer for the company's interactive entertainment division,?said the console would move away from being just that.

READ:?Nintendo Wii U, Xbox SmartGlass and PS Vita: second screen entertainment explored

"To date, our success with Xbox has been led by a box in the living room. Moving forward, Xbox will go beyond the box to reach all new families of devices. Just as Xbox has grown to mean more than just games, it also is more than just a console. This year, Xbox becomes the premium entertainment service for Microsoft.

"Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best in music and video, your favourite games and instant access to your friends. With the launch of Windows 8, we?ll bring Xbox entertainment to everyone. With Xbox on Windows 8 devices, we rapidly accelerate the reach of Xbox entertainment from more than 60 million people to hundreds of millions of people worldwide."

Mehdi went on to say: "We understand that entertainment has become a multi-screen experience where you and your friends are watching TV, listening to music, and playing games while interacting with your tablets and phones in new ways. We?ve got ideas for making all the entertainment you love more personal, interactive and social across the devices you love - and on the phenomenal Windows 8 devices that are to come."

READ:?Xbox Entertainment: Games, Video, Music, SmartGlass on all your Microsoft devices

Shortly after those comments, Microsoft launched - among other things - Xbox SmartGlass, its tablet and smartphone app that allows users to interact with the console.

We suspect that?SmartGlass?would be a key element of a set-top Xbox TV box and save Microsoft needing to include a controller with the TV-only device, and allow it to drive prices down even further.

Currently in the US there are two TV on-demand boxes that dominate the market: Roku and Apple TV, although Google is also trying to gain market share with Google TV. Roku, which launched in the UK in January this year, sees it as a core business, while Apple still sees the miniature set-top box as a sideshow.

If Microsoft is about to enter the market, things could get a lot more interesting.

hang drum,hand-drum

The hang is a really unique instrument and one that has fascinated me for sometime now. There are two ways in which to obtain a PANart hang. The first (and the most difficult) is to write a letter to the hanghaus and ask express permission to visit Bern. There you can select your hang (if you are worthy enough to play on the instrument). This is financially the best option but demand is so high and production so small that it is fairly difficult to obtain an invitation. If you go down the online 2nd hand hang route, these are often way more expensive. (Anything from $5000-$12000 in some cases). Also, beware buying some later models (which should never come up) as there are contracts in place to stop the sale of these hangs. (Integral and Free Integral Hang).

Over the years I have been following the purchase and sale of Panart Hangs and have become increasingly alarmed to see that the amount of fraudulent activity is on the increase, especially on online classified and auction sites. The same photos often appear on regular occasions, the same text and the same process to "purchase" a non existing instrument!

I currently own two of my own Panart Hangs and I will take you through the process that I went through to obtain them. I hope this will help you out as I know many people want them! It is for this reason that so many people fall short and are "conned" out of their money on a regular occurrence. Here are some tips when buying from online auction and classified sites:

1. Before you enter into a sale, keep a regular track on the instruments for sale on auction and classified sites and see the price range that these hangs are sold for and the type of descriptions that sellers provide:

Often you will see listings with a total of 25 words to describe the item. Think about it... If you knew that you had a product in your possession worth thousands of pounds, you would want to maximise this and put as MUCH down as possible. Surely?

2. Some of you are probably thinking "what if it wasn't for profit?"

The only other reason that a sale of a hang would go through is if the seller does not use the hang very much and wants to see it go to a good home so again, the description or at very least responses from the seller should always have a large amount of detail or it would send out alarm bells to me.

3. Ask the seller for a video to be uploaded as proof. BE CAREFUL.. it's very easy to reproduce existing videos and re-upload them. Ask them to put their username to the auction site / classified in the video (written on paper somewhere visible within the video). If they won't do this, I would strongly consider whether to buy or not.

4. Do NOT under any circumstances pay for items that are listed on auction sites if someone prompts you to buy early - this is almost certainly going to end up with you loosing out.

5. Ask the seller if he is prepared for you to pick up (even if you are not planning on it), you can judge by the response how legitimate the sale is.

6. If at all possible meet the seller to do the exchange - (My first hang was bought direct from the HangHaus but the second one was bought second hand). I did this as a cash transferal at the safest place I could think of! (The arrival lounge to the airport I was flying into where security was bound to be high).

7. Ask the person to trade details on ID cards/passports e.g name and address. This way if anything later crops up you will have a firm point of contact.

8. Why not google the address and name - you never know, you will hopefully find an internet track and find a match / name with address.

9. Ask for a receipt as proof of purchase with the person's name and address on. If at all possible ask for the original documents. The seller should be able to provide some evidence of proof of purchase from the Hanghaus or if it is a chain, at least the relating documents.

10. Ask the seller if there are any defects / common faults like tuning issues or rust appearing.

Greece's lenders fail again to clinch debt deal

BERLIN/ATHENS (Reuters) - International lenders failed for the second week to reach a deal to release emergency aid for Greece and will try again next Monday, but Germany signaled that major divisions remain.

Euro zone finance ministers, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank were unable to agree in 12 hours of overnight talks in Brussels on how to make the country's debt sustainable. They want a solution before paying the next urgently needed loan tranche to keep Greece afloat.

Several European officials played down the delay, saying the disagreements were technical and a deal would be reached when they meet again on November 26.

But German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told lawmakers at a closed-door briefing in Berlin that the lenders were split over several key issues including how to define debt sustainability and fill a hole in Greek finances.

"He sees the extension of the debt sustainability goal as one of the main bones of contention. The other is how to cover the Greek financing gap of 14 billion euros through 2014," said one lawmaker who attended Wednesday's meeting of Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right Christian Democrats in parliament.

Merkel herself told the lawmakers the gap could be plugged by lowering interest rates on loans to Greece and increasing guarantees provided to the euro zone's temporary EFSF bailout fund, in which Germany would take its share, a participant said.

She suggested a deal could be struck as early as next week but rejected the notion that big, bold actions could solve the debt crisis overnight.

"I believe there are chances, one doesn't know for sure, but there are chances to get a solution on Monday," Merkel told the Bundestag lower house of parliament during a debate.

Greece needs the next 31 billion euro aid tranche to keep servicing its debt and avoid bankruptcy. Its next major repayment is in mid-December.

Athens says it has carried out the tough reforms required in the bailout program but needs more time to reach fiscal targets agreed with its lenders because its economy has continued to shrink.

European governments want to give Greece an extra two years, until 2022, to cut its debt to a sustainable level but the IMF does not agree. The Europeans, led by Germany, are refusing to write off any loans. Both options would make it easier for Greece to meet the targets in the bailout program.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said agreement was close, echoing overnight comments from Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker, who said talks were stuck on technicalities.

"We are a whisker away from a deal. I am very confident we will get there on Monday," Moscovici told Europe 1 radio.

Greece is increasingly frustrated about the repeated delays in releasing the aid and says it has done what is necessary.

"Greece did what it had committed it would do. Our partners, together with the IMF, also have to do what they have taken on to do," Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said in a statement.

"Any technical difficulties in finding a technical solution do not justify any negligence or delays."

Samaras will meet Juncker in Brussels on Thursday and has cancelled a trip to Qatar next week to monitor the talks, a government spokesman said.

The prime minister is under growing pressure from his own coalition allies and the opposition after pushing through deeply unpopular austerity measures that he said were the only way to get more aid to avert bankruptcy.

"?he eurozone cannot use Greece as an alibi to justify its weakness in dealing effectively and definitively with the crisis," said Evangelos Venizelos, head of the co-ruling PASOK party. Opposition leader Alexis Tsipras, whose party is rising in polls, said Samaras had lost all credibility.

Investors were disappointed with the news. Greek banking stocks fell nearly 6 percent in morning trade. Most of Greece's next aid instalment has been earmarked to shore up the country's tottering banks.

The euro, European shares and the prices of higher-yielding euro zone debt lost some ground but later recovered some of the losses.

NO WRITE DOWN

A document prepared for the meeting and seen by Reuters showed that Greece's debt cannot be cut from 170 percent of GDP to 120 percent, the level deemed sustainable by the IMF, unless either euro zone member states write off a portion of their loans to Greece or the IMF extends its deadline by two years.

Germany and other EU states say writing down their loans would be illegal. The European Central Bank, a major holder of Greek bonds, has refused to take a "haircut" on its holdings.

Berlin contends a debt haircut would not tackle the roots of Greece's debt problems and would be unfair to other euro zone countries that have taken tough steps to improve their finances.

"It would cost money, it would be a fatal signal to Ireland, Portugal and possibly Spain, as they would immediately ask why they should accept difficult conditions and push through difficult measures...and it would have consequences under budget law," Norbert Barthle, budget spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats said.

Without corrective measures, the Eurogroup document said, Greek debt would be 144 percent in 2020 and 133 percent in 2022.

Juncker said after a meeting a week ago that he wanted to extend the target date to reduce Greek debt by two years to 2022, but Lagarde insists the 2020 goal should stand. She is believed to favor euro zone member states taking a writedown.

The European commissioner for economic affairs, Olli Rehn, said on Tuesday that the euro zone should be ready to do more for Greece in the coming years, an apparent nod to the idea of government-sector debt writedowns.

"It's essential now that we take a decision on a set of credible measures on debt sustainability and, at the same time, we need to be ready to take further decisions in the light of future developments," Rehn said.

DEBT BUYBACK

Among the main measures under consideration to bring the debt burden down as rapidly as possible is a buy-back under which Greece would offer to purchase bonds from private investors at a sharp discount to their face value.

Schaeuble told the lawmakers on Wednesday that a debt buyback could be part of the solution.

Several options are under consideration including using about 10 billion euros of money lent by the EFSF to buy back bonds at between 30 and 35 cents on the euro.

There are also proposals to reduce the interest rate on loans already extended by euro zone countries to Greece, to allow a long moratorium on interest payments and lengthen the maturities on loans, all of which would cut the debt burden.

Skype launches gift cards, lets parents drop hints to distant kids

Many empty-nester parents would like nothing more than to hear from their kids every now and then. For them, Skype's new gift cards might be the perfect not-so-subtle clue: both digital and physical cards are going on sale today that offer $10 or more in credit, either for the company's time-honored VoIP calling or (if need be) some Skype WiFi at the airport. Only online versions are customizable, although Americans who want something tangible can swing by the Microsoft Store, OfficeMax or Target. Skype's already brought prepaid credit to Mexico and the UK, but the cards should be more than welcome gift options for anyone who would otherwise have to spring for a prepaid phone card -- just be prepared for more heart-to-heart chats than usual if you're on the receiving end.
