Movie review: Romance, farce collide in - The Salt Lake Tribune

This film image released by FilmDistrict shows Gerard Butler in a scene from "Playing for Keeps." (AP Photo/FilmDistrict, Dale Robinette)

The clock may be running out on Gerard Butler?s window as a viable leading man, as his scruffy charms wear thin in the romantic comedy "Playing for Keeps."

Butler plays George Darby, once an internationally renowned soccer star but now a down-on-his-luck divorced dad in a D.C. suburb. Watching his son, Lewis (Noah Lomax), at soccer practice, George gets frustrated by the terrible coaching and decides to take over coaching duties himself.

?Playing for Keeps?

Opens Friday, Dec. 7, at theaters everywhere; rated PG-13 for some sexual situations, language and a brief intense image; 106 minutes.

George soon draws the admiring gaze of the various soccer moms: needy Barb (Judy Greer), man-eating Denise (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and still-married Patti (Uma Thurman), in spite of her possessive husband, Carl (Dennis Quaid). But George?s heart still belongs to Lewis? mom, Stacie (Jessica Biel), who?s about to marry dull-but-nice Matt (James Tupper).

Director Gabriele Muccino ("Seven Pounds," "The Pursuit of Happyness") can?t decide whether Robbie Fox?s script should be played as sex farce or heart-tugging romance ? and splitting the difference is a loser both ways.

What are Your Options If You are Injured in a Hit and Run ...

According to Crime Prevention Tips, hit and run car accidents are those in which one driver fails to stop or offer assistance following a mishap that causes injury or damage. While most drivers do all that they can to render help when it comes to a situation such as this, others flee the scene of the crime. Individuals or their family members who have been injured in a hit and run should investigate all possible options following the event to ensure that justice has been obtained. Though there are a number of different choices available for individuals in this situation, some of the most common include settling on a private basis, file for injury and damages through the perpetrator?s insurance, or filing through personal insurance.

In many cases, an individual who has been injured in a hit and run will have a difficult time tracking down the perpetrator of the crime. It is important to note however, that this process is not impossible?and can often be accomplished through assistance from bystanders, witnesses, and legal experts. If an individual who has been injured in a hit and run is able to establish communication with the other driver involved in the accident, a private settlement may be made. This may include payment for medical bills, as well as damage done to a car or personal property.

Just because the perpetrator of the hit and run is located, doesn?t necessarily mean that he or she is willing to participate in a private settlement. Oftentimes, hit and run victims may believe that this is not the best option for them when working to achieve justice. Instead, individuals who have tracked down the person behind the hit and run may prefer to file a claim with said person?s vehicle insurance. Though getting a claim payment in this manner may be time consuming, it will also likely result in a larger and more attractive settlement total, which will include payment for medical and property bills.

As indicated previously, settling privately or filing a claim with another driver?s car insurance is not always a possibility, as tracking the criminal down may prove to be impossible. In this event, injured parties may choose to file a charge with their own vehicle insurance?which typically falls under the heading of ?uninsured motorist claims.? While this is typically done only as a last resort, it is an effective way to cover the hospital and vehicle repair bills associated with a hit and run accident. Individuals who file this type of claim should be prepared to participate in a series of investigative interviews, during which all leads as to the identity of the criminal are eliminated.

Obviously, a hit and run is a serious accident that can significantly affect the lives of its victims. While many hit and runs lead to significant property damage, some also cause serious injuries and health problems. Understanding what to do when this type of accident occurs is essential for motorists and pedestrians alike. Working with a qualified legal expert can be an effective way to ensure optimal results following a hit and run that has resulted in injury or illness.

Abelson Law has had extensive experience working with Hit and Run victims and can help you get through the process.

'Time reversal' research may open doors to future tech

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? Imagine a cell phone charger that recharges your phone remotely without even knowing where it is; a device that targets and destroys tumors, wherever they are in the body; or a security field that can disable electronics, even a listening device hiding in a prosthetic toe, without knowing where it is.

While these applications remain only dreams, researchers at the University of Maryland have come up with a sci-fi seeming technology that one day could make them real. Using a "time-reversal" technique, the team has discovered how to transmit power, sound or images to a "nonlinear object" without knowing the object's exact location or affecting objects around it.

"That's the magic of time reversal," says Steven Anlage, a university physics professor involved in the project. "When you reverse the waveform's direction in space and time, it follows the same path it took coming out and finds its way exactly back to the source."

Play It Backwards

The time-reversal process is less like living the last five minutes over and more like playing a record backwards, explains Matthew Frazier, a postdoctoral research fellow in the university's physics department. When a signal travels through the air, its waveforms scatter before an antenna picks it up. Recording the received signal and transmitting it backwards reverses the scatter and sends it back as a focused beam in space and time.

"If you go toward a secure building, they won't let you take cell phones," Frazier says, so instead of checking everyone, they could detect the cell phone and send a lot of energy to it to jam it."

What differentiates this research from other time-reversal projects, such as underwater communication, is that it focuses on nonlinear objects such as a cellphone, diode or even a rusty piece of metal --when a waveform bounces off them, the frequency changes.

Most components electrical engineers work with are linear -- capacitors, wire, antennas -- because they do not change the frequency. With nonlinear objects, however, when the altered, nonlinear frequency is recorded, time-reversed and retransmitted, it creates a private communication channel because other objects cannot "understand" the signal.

"Time reversal has been around for 10 to 20 years but it requires some pretty sophisticated technology to make it work," Anlage says. "Technology is now catching up to where we are able to use it in some new and interesting ways."

Not only could this nonlinear characteristic secure a wireless communication line, it could prevent transmitted energy from affecting any object but its target. For example, Frazier says, if scientists find a way to tag tumors with chemicals or nanoparticles that react to microwaves in a nonlinear way, doctors could use the technology to direct destructive heat to the errant cells -- much like ultrasound is used to break down kidney stones. But unlike an ultrasound, that is directed to a specific location, doctors would not need to know where the tumors were and the heat treatment would not affect surrounding cells.

Bouncing Off the Walls

To study the phenomenon, the researchers sent a microwave pulse into an enclosed area where waveforms scattered and bounced around inside, as well as off a nonlinear and a linear port. A transceiver then recorded and time-reversed the frequencies the nonlinear port had altered and broadcast them back into the space. The nonlinear port picked up the time-reversed signal but the linear port did not.

"Everything we have done has been in very controlled conditions in labs," Frazier says. "It will take more research to figure out how to develop treatments," Frazier says. "I'm sure there are other uses we haven't thought of."

The team has submitted an invention disclosure to the university's Office of Technology Commercialization.

EARTH PHOTO GALLERY: Photos of Earth since 1960s

President John F. Kennedy spelled out the mission clearly in his 1961 speech committing the United States to send humans to the moon and back by the end of the decade. He left no doubt about the definition of success and laid out a clear vision.

Now, five decades after his challenge, a panel of space, science and engineering experts said in a stinging report that NASA does not have a goal.

While the future of the space agency may be unclear, its past missions produced some iconic images that gave us all a view of the world that makes it seems not quite so big, including newly released photos that include city lights at night.

Here's an Associated Press photo gallery with some of those images.

Census of the invisible universe reveals extraordinary high star-formation rates across history of the universe

ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2012) ? By combining the observing powers of ESA's Herschel space observatory and the ground-based Keck telescopes, astronomers have characterised hundreds of previously unseen starburst galaxies, revealing extraordinary high star-formation rates across the history of the Universe.

Starburst galaxies give birth to hundreds of solar masses' worth of stars each year in short-lived but intense events.

By comparison, our own Milky Way Galaxy on average produces the equivalent of only one Sun-like star per year.

Starburst galaxies generate so much starlight that they should outshine our Galaxy hundreds to thousands of times over, but the enormous quantities of gas fuelling them also contain vast amounts of dust as a result of the frantic star formation.

The dust absorbs much of the visible light, meaning that many of them look quite insignificant in that part of the spectrum.

However, the dust is warmed by the surrounding hot stars and re-emits the energy at far-infrared wavelengths.

Using ESA's infrared Herschel space observatory, astronomers measured the temperature and brightness of thousands of dusty galaxies. From these, their star-formation rate could be then calculated.

"Starburst galaxies are the brightest galaxies in the Universe and contribute significantly to cosmic star formation, so it's important to study them in detail and understand their properties," says Dr Caitlin Casey of the University of Hawai'i, lead author of the papers discussing the results in the Astrophysical Journal.

"Some of the galaxies found in this new survey have star-formation rates equivalent to the birth of several thousand solar-mass stars per year, constituting some of the brightest infrared galaxies yet discovered."

To provide context to the observations and understand how star formation has changed over the Universe's 13.7 billion year history, the distances to the galaxies were also needed.

With Herschel signposting the way, Dr Casey's team used spectrometers on the twin 10-metre W.M. Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i, and obtained the redshifts of 767 of the starburst galaxies.

Redshifts provide astronomers with a measure of how long the light from each galaxy has travelled across the Universe, which, in turn, indicates when in cosmic history the light from each galaxy was emitted.

For most of the galaxies it was found that the light has been travelling towards us for 10 billion years or less.

About 5% of the galaxies are at even greater redshifts: their light was emitted when the Universe was only 1-3 billion years old.

"The Herschel data tell us how fiercely and prolifically these galaxies are producing stars," says Seb Oliver from University of Sussex, UK, and Principal Investigator for the HerMES Key Programme, within which the data have been collected.

"Combining this information with the distances provided by the Keck data, we can uncover the contribution of the starburst galaxies to the total amount of stars produced across the history of the Universe."

How such large numbers of starburst galaxies formed during the first few billions of years of the Universe's existence poses a vital problem for galaxy formation and evolution studies.

One leading theory proposes that a collision between two young galaxies could have sparked an intense short-lived phase of star formation.

Another theory speculates that, when the Universe was young, individual galaxies had much more gas available to them to feed from, enabling higher rates of star formation without the need of collisions.

"It's a hotly debated topic that requires details on the shape and rotation of the galaxies before it can be resolved," adds Dr Casey.

"Before Herschel, the largest similar survey of distant starbursts involved only 73 galaxies -- we've improved on that by over a factor of ten in this combined survey with Keck to determine the characteristics of this important galaxy population," adds G?ran Pilbratt, ESA's Herschel project scientist.
